  1. Acute sore throat: duration of antibiotic How long? 10 day course of Penicillin is preferred and 5 day course of Clarithromycin is reserved for children with penicillin allergy

  2. Acute sinusitis Etiology: S. pneumoniae, M. catarrhalis, H. influenzae Symptoms: • Acute URI presents with nasal discharge of any quality + cough • Throat clearing indicates post nasal drip Role of Antibiotics?

  3. Acute sinusitis A. Nearly all cases of acute bacterial sinusitis resolve without antibiotics. B. Antibiotics are used • Symptoms not improving after 10 days • Symptoms worsen after five to seven days • Severe symptoms: fever and purulent nasal discharge >3 days
