The Mining Gender Pay Gap:Remuneration Check for Companies

  • Respondents to the 2007 AusIMM Employment and Remuneration Survey were asked to rank their level of responsibility, where Level 1 was graduate level and Level 5 was senior management.

  • Average annual base salary at each level of responsibility was calculated for male and female respondents

  • Because males tend to work more hours than females, an approximate pay per hour variable was created based on the formula (Annual base salary)/(hours per week*52).

  • Controlling for hours worked, males still tend to earn more than females at every level with the exception of level 1

AusIMM Remuneration survey ‘07

  • Females on significantly less- table 1

  • Females work on average less hours than men, but it is still less when adjusted and put into hourly rates- table 2

  • No significance site, city or FIFO according to survey

    Questions for Companies

  • Check a sample of mining engineers, geologists and metallurgists, all levels

  • If it is different and it is valid, find out the reasons

  • If there is no difference – can we know?

  • If there is found to be a difference and it is fixed. Can you let us know it is fixed?

  • Can you let us know the strategies that were implemented to achieve this so that we can promote amongst our membership?
