  2. Dr. Ganesh Ramalingamgraduated from the National University of Singapore all the way back in 1997 and completed his post-graduate training atthe Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh. Educating the new generation of doctors is also one of his passions. He tries his best to assist his juniors by being active in the Residency Program and he currently is the Proctor of the Fundamentals of Laparoscopic Surgery at Khoo Teck Puat Hospital. He also teaches courses and serves as an examiner at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine when his schedulepermits..

Ifyou’replanningtohavesurgery,you’llwanttospendsome timepreparing.Thatmeanstakingcareofyourhealth, learningasmuchasyoucanabouttheprocedure,andgetting to know the people who will be taking care of you. Planning aheadcanhelpensureyouhaveasuccessfulprocedureand healfasterwithasmoothrecovery.

  4. Follow pre-surgery directions anddiet. Unless you’re having only local anesthesia, you may betold not to eat or drink anything after midnight before your procedure. This is because of the rare risk of food or liquid in your stomach getting into your lungs while you’re under sedation or general anesthesia. Ask your physician anesthesiologist for guidance; you may be told you can drink clear liquids and take your regularmedications.

  5. Bring afriend You won’t be allowed to drive after outpatient surgery, or even after a few days in the hospital if you’re taking pain medication. Plan to have someone take youhome.

  6. WEAR COMFORTABLE CLOTHING Wear or bring loose-fitting clothing. Yourbody might be sore or swollen from surgery, or you may have bulky bandagesover your incisions. Leave jewelry and valuables athome.

  7. Talk about with thephysician anesthesiologist Sometime before the day of your surgery, you should meet with your physiciananesthesiologist so he or she can gather the information that will help determine the right anesthesia care planfor you.

  8. Yourfears It’s natural to fear surgery and anesthesia. If you’re afraid, tell your physician anesthesiologist. He or she can give you information to ease your mind and help you feelsafe.

  9. Yourrecovery The physician anesthesiologist continues to care for you after surgery, so ask about how any pain will be managed and any concerns you have about recovery, returning home, and getting back to your normalroutine.
