  1. Warmup 4/08/2013 • Use the following DNA sequence to answer the 3 questions:CGGTAA • Replicate the DNA: • Transcribe the DNA: • Translate the DNA:

  2. Warmup4/09/2013 • What type of bond is used to hold the two sides of DNA together? • What are the 3 parts that make up a nucleotide? • Who discovered the structure of DNA?

  3. Mutations

  4. Mutations • Change in the DNA of an individual • Can be caused by • Radiation such as the sun • Chemicals such as carcinogens3 • Spontaneous, we don’t know why yet • Only transferred to the offspring if it happens in the gametes

  5. Types of Mutations • Point Mutations • Change in 1 nucleotide base pair in the DNA sequence, it gets replaced • May or may not cause problems with the amino acid sequence • EXAMPLE • TTT GGG CCC AAA: Original • TTT AGG CCC AAA: Mutated

  6. Types of Mutations • Frameshift Mutations • Causes the codon reading frame to get moved up or down one spot • Insertion: when a new nucleotide gets put into the sequence • Deletion: when 1 nucleotide gets removed from the sequence • Always causes problems with the amino acid sequence

  7. Frameshift Mutations EXAMPLE • Insertion • TTT GGG CCC AAA: Original • TTT GGG ACC CAA A: Mutated • Deletion • TTT GGG CCC AAA: Original • TTT GGC CCA AA: Mutated

  8. DNA Mutation Consequences

  9. Partners Period 4 • Unique-Michael • Nick-Brittany • Spencer-Daniel • Meshia-Brandon • Dimitris-Brenda • Derek-Sierra • Damesha-Madison • Daeshawn-Erika • Katherine-De’Niro • Janee-Tyler-Jasmine • Tiara-JaVonna • Da’Jaina-Jennifer • Jordan-Ezekiel • Yasmeen-Bruce • Carlos-Derick

  10. Mutation Mini-Project • Read the article you have been given and answer the following questions on a separate piece of paper: • On what chromosome is your disease found? • What part of the body is affected? • What is your disease? (ie. What doesn’t work that is supposed to?) • What are the symptoms? • How did the person get the disorder? • Write out the original DNA and the mutated DNA, transcribe and translate it • Circle the different amino acid(s)

  11. Warmup • What is a mutation? • What type of mutation has the chance of not changing the protein?

  12. Warmup • What are 3 differences between DNA and RNA? • What are the three parts of a nucleotide? • In which organelle does translation take place?
