  4. History of Prozac • 1970s – Eli Lilly and Co. • Organic Chemists were working on finding new compounds that showed activity at serotonin receptor sites. • Came across 82816 (fluoxetine) • Continued in 1980s • Zimelidine (serotonin uptake blocker) was tested in rats and found that it helped with the addiction of morphine and alcohol. • Found that drugs that increase concentrations of brain serotonin cause animals/humans to drink less alcohol and resulted in weight loss. • Already had the name Prozac picked out. • Became secret investigation when Prozac was classified as an antidepressant instead. • Approved by the FDA in 1987

  5. Production • Prozac is made from almost entirely from fluoride. • Fluoride is the main ingredient in rat and cockroach poisons, anesthetic ,hypnotic and psychiatric drugs, and military nerve gas. • Synthetic drug • One of the most prescribed drugs in U.S • Leading antidepressant

  9. Risks • Long term use leads to dependence. • LD50= 284mg/kg in mice • User goes through withdrawal if they miss a dose or stop taking the drug completely. • Withdrawal symptoms include • Dizziness • Nausea • Headaches • Vomiting • Irritability • Nightmares

  10. Detection • While on Prozac, a blood test can be taken to measure serotonin levels. • Used to see if it causes an increase/decrease in serotonin. • Brain biopsy is more accurate. • Prozac stays in the body for a long time. • Test positive for up to 3 months

  11. Consequences • Prozac is a prescription only drug. • Illegal to sell prescription drugs to other people or get them from other people • Fines • Imprisonment • Treatments: • Counseling • Doctors • Rehab
