Challenges • PA is the 4th highest health risk factor by WHO (heart disease, stroke, depression). • Mental health issues the most expensive category in health system • Strongly aligned to policy, synergies existing ecosystem programmes i.e. not standalone eg. Compton, • European-wide synergy and concertationegEurocities, http://nowwemove.com • Sustainable Business models include social dimensions, ie. social clause/value proposition affects emotions of volunteers and end users • Success factors – motivating users and lead users – affecting emotions & changing behaviour • EG. Community development & charities – People get active by doing good for others eg. fundraising. Eg. Special Effects/Gaze Control • Demonstrate additionality of People Olympics – not only health – safety, employability, depression, regeneration etc. • “Health and Equalities Agenda” – determinants of health & equality that leads to social inclusion. - EG. Risk behaviours: poor mental health, employability, skills, poverty… • Platform enabler for creation of secondary markets for social innovation (City & EC-wide)

Key Challenge: Reduce Sedentary Behaviour • Tap into multiple contexts for PA (work, home, community, schools, active ageing etc) & demographic groups (elderly, children, unemployed, disabled etc) • Change culture – sit down in cars, buses, office, meetings, lunch breaks etc • How can we use technology to help break this culture? • How can we make PA programmessustainable?eg PIPS • Much research in PA, but gap with psychological wellbeing & psychological inactivity and sedentary behaviour. • Sedentary behaviour is linked to cardiovascalar disease, depression etc • Displacement theory – eg. can be PA but also sedantary because job is office based…

Belfast & People Olympics • Active Belfast (policy) – promote physical activity (sport, walking, gardening – social inclusion), Active travelling (walk & cycle – most manageable activities for people to build into their lives). Empowered don’t need a walk group. • Belfast currently has an application to WHO to become an age friendly city • Belfast Strategic Partnership – addressing life inequalities, led by PHA, Council, Trusts & 23 community organisations • Health Ageing Strategic Partnership (400 older people groups) • Emotional Resilience strategy (inclusion, wellbeing) • ‘Belfast Works’ – lifelong learning, employment and education system • Belfast City Council European Unit – social inclusion strategy & action plan for Belfast City • Member of Eurocities & Smart Social Inclusion Working Group • Cross cutting themes/Additionality: • Belfast Drugs and Alcohol Coordinated theme (BDACT) • Poverty & Safety
