FDR’s Goals in Alleviating Great Depression • 1932 Election • Democratic Candidate FDR won the presidency • Democrats also gained control of the Congress with a large majority • FDR & his advisors planned programs – The New Deal – to solve the economic problem, with following goals • To provide relief for the needy • To have economic recovery • To do financial reform
Main Programs • Important laws to expand federal government’s power • Declared “Bank Holiday” – “Emergency Banking Relief Act” was passed • Glass-Steagall Act established FDIC
Federal Securities Act was Passed • Companies had to provide accurate information about their stocks • Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) was set up • Direct talk with people • “Fireside Chats”
Providing Help to People • Agricultural Adjustment Act (AAA) was passed • TVA was set up • Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) was established • Federal Emergency Relief Administration (FERA) provided direct relief. • National Industrial Recovery Act (NIRA) passed
The National Industrial Recovery Act (NIRA) • Created Public Works Administration (PWA) • Guaranteed workers’ right to organize unions • Set up National Recovery Administrations (NRA) • Home Owners’ Loan Corporation (HOLC)
Critiques of New Deal • New Deal was funded by “Deficit Spending” • Supreme Court’s Unfavorable Reaction • Individual Critiques: • Charles Coughlin • Francis Townsend • Huey Long
Supreme Court found two important parts of new deal unconstitutional: NIRA & AAA • Roosevelt wanted his supporters to be in the Court. • Three Main Critiques • Father Charles Coughlin, a Roman Catholic Priest: Guaranteed income and Nationalization of Banks • Dr. Francis Townsend – proposed pension plan for the elderly • Senator Huey Long of Louisiana • Proposed a program called “Share Our Wealth”
