ANTI DEPRESSANTS • Mood-stabilizing drugs • Used to treat depressive disorders, anxiety attacks, OCD etc • They increase the activity of certain neurotransmitters in the brain • Side effects are drowsiness, changes in appetite and increased feelings of depression and anxiety • Not proven to be addictive

  4. cannabis • MARIJUANA • Has mind altering chemicals • 4-5 X worse than tobacco • Immediate effects of euphoria, relaxation • Is addictive

  5. DEPRESSANTS/barbiturates • Sedatives • Slow down the body’s functions (CNS) • Reduce blood pressure, heart rate and breathing • Very addictive • Tranquilizers, barbiturates, hypnotics, sleeping pills, alcohol • Downers • Can be deadly when combined with alcohol

  6. HALLUCINOGENS • Distort moods, thoughts & senses • Affects nervous system & perception • Increases Heart Rate • Effects can last several hours or days • Can cause death • Magic mushrooms, LSD

  7. INHALANTS • Fumes are sniffed & inhaled to give a hallucinogenic like high. • Solvents, aerosols; glue, spray paint, gasoline. • Damage caused to kidneys, liver and kills brain cells. • Can cause death.

  8. NARCOTICS • Derivative of Opium • Some obtainable only by prescription to relieve pain: eg morphine • Others are illegal: eg Heroin • Codeine – pain killers • Highly addictive

  9. Anabolic steroids • Synthetic version of testosterone • Used to promote growth of muscle and bones • Can disrupt the normal production of hormones • Increase chance of Heart disease – which can be fatal

  10. STIMULANTS • Speed up the body’s functions • Increase blood pressure, breathing • Feel alert & awake • Addictive (physically & mentally) • Very dangerous when concentration not known. • eg. Caffiene, cocaine, nicotine

  11. Designer drugs • Drugs that are made from chemicals that resemble illegal substances • Destroys brain cells • Individual doesn’t know what they are consuming – very dangerous • Eg. Ecstasy
