  2. All About You Key Learning: Discovering things about yourself can lead to personal success and satisfaction. Unit Essential Question: How can my principles, skills and interests help me be successful in life?

  5. What’s Your Theme Song? First Assignment: • Find a song (any genre; all words school appropriate) that describes you well. • The song could represent your attitude, resources, personality, self-concept, values, interests, or abilities.

Sometimes it’s hard to be honest with yourself, but… • Understanding your strengths allows you to use them to your advantage. • Understanding your weaknesses gives you areas in which to improve. • Knowing what interests you leads you to engaging activities. • You can better use your resources.

  17. SELF INVENTORIES • SELF INVENTORIES are tests or surveys that help you learn about yourself.

Interests Your INTERESTS are the ideas, subjects, or activities you enjoy. • Pursuing your interests energizes and engages you. • People who are interested in their work are usually successful and happy. • Most interests can be turned into careers. • Careers typically focus on 1 of 3 interest categories- People Data Objects

Personality Your PERSONALITY is the group of traits that make you unique (think adjectives). • Positive personality traits- honest, caring, assertive. • Negative personality traits- unreliable, selfish, dishonest. • Everyone has positive and negative personality traits. They make you unique and make up some of your strengths and weaknesses. • Certain traits, like being critical, can be positive or negative depending on how it is used and who is evaluating the trait.

Career Thoughts Personality is important to your career... • Understanding your personality leads you to careers that will motivate you and you’ll enjoy. • People react in a positive way when they like your personality (making you a good coworker, or leader.) How does your personality affect the people around you and their desire to work with you?

Aptitudes Your APTITUDES are natural talents you have or the potential to learn skills quickly & easily. • Others may spot your aptitudes before you do. • Aptitude tests can help you identify aptitudes you haven’t discovered yet. • Examples- music, writing, sports, art, math What do you think are your aptitudes?

  29. How You Grow Aptitudes can grow into skills. Skills can be developed and mastered. Your set of skills can expand into abilities!

Skills Your SKILLS are things you can do proficiently because you’ve improved through training and education. • Aptitudes come naturally, but skills must be nurtured and mastered. • Careers require different sets of skills.   32. Abilities Your ABILITIES are the set of skills you have developed to a mastery level. • Abilities can be aptitudes you’ve developed and improved. Aptitude- quick, coordinated movement. Ability- typing skills or playing a piano well. • If you do not have an aptitude for a skill, you must work harder to develop the ability to perform that skill at a master level.

  34. Attitude Your ATTITUDE is how you react to a situation. • Your attitude affects your happiness. • Your attitude shapes how others view you. • Employers try to hire people with a positive attitude. • You CAN control your attitude. Sometimes you have to DECIDE to be positive.

Self-Concept Your SELF-CONCEPT is recognition of both your strengths & weaknesses and feeling good about yourself by accepting who you are. • Self-concept can affect your personality and attitude in a positive or negative way. • People with a realistic self–concept see themselves as they are, not how they want to be or how others see them. • A high self-esteem -or- respect for oneself, usually comes with having a realistic and complete self-concept. • Self-concept can change as you have new experiences and are faced with challenging situations.

Self-Concept • Your self-concept should come from what’s inside of YOU, not what you’re told by friends, adults, society, or media. • You must be honest with yourself to have a realistic self-concept. • Acknowledging weaknesses does not make you weak. It helps you get stronger. • Your self-concept affects how others see you too. • People who brag a lot or bully often have a poor self-concept and are covering their insecurities.

  40. Values Your VALUES are the beliefs, ideas, and objects that are important to you as a person. • Values are influenced by family, friends, religious beliefs, experiences, and community. Honesty, Family, Health, Religion, Education, Relationships • Work Values relate to the work you do or respect. Creativity, Status, Ethics, Variety, Teamwork, Time, Recognition

  42. Values FAMILY- eats dinner with the family every night to promote family unity and spend time together. EDUCATION- studies and saves money for college. FRIENDSHIPS- acts as a good listener when your friend is having a hard time. Keeps confidences. TIME- prepares a schedule to prioritize things they need to do. MONEY- creates a budget to spend wisely and save some. INDEPENDENCE- works to save money for a car or a house. ETHICS- is honest with clients when you cannot do a job within a certain timeframe or budget.

People with a good, strong work ethic: • Are self motivated to accomplish their goals. • Are recognized as reliable and responsible. • Are willing to work to accomplish tasks. • Are usually successful and are given opportunities. Resources A RESOURCE is anything a person can use to help reach a goal. • A positive attitude and aptitudes are resources you have within you. • Time is a resources that everyone has, but it is limited. • A free education and access to teachers and counselors are resources all Americans have. • Unique/Limited resources include- personal connections, inside information, money, personal experiences, materials you have access to, opportunities like internships or scholarships.
