  2. Blood Systems Inc. Founded in 1943 as the Salt River Valley Blood Bank in Phoenix, Arizona, today Blood Systems is one of the nation’s oldest and largest blood service providers. Our non-profit community blood centers, United Blood Services, Blood Centers of the Pacific, and Inland Northwest Blood Center provide blood, blood components, and special services to patients in more than 500 hospitals in 20 states, from California to the Gulf Coast, from the “Tip o’ Texas” to the Canadian border.

  7. Operational Scope • Collected ~1.5 million blood donations • Tested 3.3 million blood samples for ~150 blood and tissue facilities • 3,900 employees • 15 regional blood centers serving patients in more than 500 hospitals in 20 states

In a Typical Day… • 3,607 red blood cell donations are collected • 351 staff go out on 77 blood drives to meet, interview and collect blood from 2,028 volunteer blood donors • 3,305 people donate at 73 donor centers • $4,000 worth of juice and cookies is consumed by donors • $149,000 is spent on testing costs • $128,265 is spent on collection supplies such as: blood bags, arm preps, gloves, needles and Co-Wrap™ bandages (the bandage wrapped around your arm after a blood donation) • Hospitals use 3,245 units of red blood cells for surgeries and emergency treatment • Hospitals use 450 units of apheresis platelets for leukemia and other cancer patients • Patients with clotting deficiencies receive 952 units of plasma • 370 units of cryoprecipitate are transfused to hemophilia patients • Each day, United Blood Services deploys a fleet of 543 vehicles, including 92 self-contained buses
