Know About Colon Cancer

Colon cancer, starting as polyps in the colon or rectum, may cause symptoms like changes in bowel habits, blood in stool, abdominal discomfort, weakness, or unintended weight loss. Treatments include surgery (removing tumor or part/whole colon), chemotherapy, radiation therapy, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy. Early detection through screenings like colonoscopies is vital for better outcomes.

  5. Treatments Radiation Therapy Chemotherapy Immunotherapy Radiation therapy uses high-energy rays to kill cancer cells. It's not typically used as the primary treatment for colon cancer, but it may be used in combination with surgery or chemotherapy in certain situations, such as to shrink tumors before surgery or to relieve symptoms of advanced cancer. Immunotherapy drugs help the body's immune system recognize and attack cancer cells. Pembrolizumab (Keytruda) and nivolumab (Opdivo) are examples of immunotherapy drugs that may be used to treat advanced colon cancer. Chemotherapy uses drugs to kill cancer cells or stop their growth. It can be used before surgery (neoadjuvant chemotherapy) to shrink tumors, after surgery (adjuvant chemotherapy) to kill any remaining cancer cells, or as the primary treatment for advanced colon cancer.
