What do you want to do? We can make it happen." “Learn how to change the world.” “Learn how some of the best humanitarian organizations do what they do.” “Get the inside scoop on how the best humanitarian organizations started.” “You can become a Hew Humanitarian.” “Making a difference in the world—Yes, you can.”

  4. Synopsis of The New Humanitarians Welcome to a trip around the world. You will travel to six continents, led by men and women of vari- ous ages and backgrounds. Be warned, you may go to some fairly desperate places, but they all have a seed of hope. You will not be traveling as a tourist, but rather as an activist with more than three dozen organizations— each one incredible. Each chapter is a story, a story of need, of response, and of accomplishment. They are all at once different, but yet the same as being an inspirational account demonstrating the power of the individual tri- umphant over the challenges of poverty, illness, conflict, or a litany of injustices. My friend, Jonathan Gran- off, President of the Global Security Institute, said of the project that it is a counter to the pervasive “pornography of the trivial” that infects much of what is in print these days. I suspect he is correct. While many of us are content in helping various causes by writing checks of support or perhaps even volunteering, the individuals profiled herein preferred to actually start their own organizations—to enact their passionate interests. So, therein was the idea that crystallized the concept for this New Humani- tarians project. I wanted to find out what makes these New Humanitarians tick and how their brainchildren worked. Now, through this three volume set, readers can, too. In developing the Center for Global Initiatives, I came to realize that while there are many success- ful, ground-breaking models that already exist world-wide, there really isn’t a blueprint or a how-to on the subject. While this is most likely due to the uniqueness of the organizations and their leadership examined herein, as well as their idiosyncratic approach to conducting their work, it is my hope that this book-set will nevertheless provide readers a unique behind-the-scenes glimpse of the organizations and offer incredibly valuable insights, present insider experiences, and give advice that few would ever have access to from one organization, let alone from more than forty of the best-of-the-best. I have been fortunate to have had the rare and heady opportunity to have worked with some of the most innovative humanitarian organizations in the world, or to have collaborated with their incredibly tal- ented founders/directors. It is my experiences with these incredible people that led to my idea for this book project. Many have more skin-in-the-game.

  5. Looks Who’s talking About The New Humanitarians and What they are Saying... “All of us aspire to someday “make a real difference” in the world yet, caught up in our own day- to-day personal crises and seemingly pressing obligations, very few of us ever fulfill this important human dream Chris Stout is a world class humanitarian who has taken the time to vividly explore the inside world of those who have succeeded Perhaps with this new appreciation for how to succeed, more of us will even- tually fulfill our own personal quest to make the world just a little bit better.” Pat DeLeon, Ph.D., M.P.H., JD, Past President of the American Psychological Association "Stout's stories of social innovators in The New Humanitarians are inspiring and instructive -- helpful to anyone who wants to participate in building a better world." David Bornstein, author, How to Change The World: Social Entrepreneurs and the Power of New Ideas, and The Price of a Dream, and has written for The Atlantic Monthly, The New York Times, New York News- day, and other major publications. “Usually we think it takes someone extraordinary to do something of great value—a Gandhi or a King In fact, the people profiled in these volumes are just like most of us—nobodies to start with, who became somebodies because they answered a call. The moral here may be that if we hear that “still small voice,” act on it. It can make a difference, including just supporting any of these organizations at any level, or one like them.” John Steiner, Co-founder, The National Commons and Chair, the Transpartisan Center “Poverty takes many forms, from lack of health care and the most basic education, to vulner- ability to the abuse of others. Where governments and multilateral agencies are falling short, concerned individuals have been racing forward with creative solutions like white blood cells addressing infec- tions. This is one of the most powerful movements at work in the world today. Chris Stout is shining a bright light on their critically important work.” Welford Welch, Author, The Tactics of Hope - How Social Entrepreneurs Are Changing Our World “We learn by our own experiences and by living the experiences of others through stories. We are human because of our connectedness with other humans. What Chris has done in The New Hu- manitarians is to capture and share in a compelling way the inspirational stories of people who are making a real difference to others; people who are leading beyond self-interest. Just think if we all did that…” Fields Wicker-Miurin is the co-founder and Partner of Leaders' Quest, former Chief Financial and Strat- egy Officer of the London Stock Exchange, Non-Executive Director of the CDC Group plc, the UK's devel- opment finance institution, and a Governor of King's College London.

  6. “In the late 1990s, I had the pleasure of working with Chris Stout for a year when he joined the SPSSI team at UN Headquarters in New York. His sustained, incredible energy, passion, and psycho- logical insight which he brought to bear on the crucial importance of attaining the goals of the World Conference on Social Development –Poverty Alleviation, Productive Employment, and Social Integra- tion— were exemplary. His various accomplishments since then reflect his concrete contributions to these social issues. This three-volume work on The New Humanitarians: Inspiration, Innovations and Blueprints for Visionaries continues in this vein and is a significant contribution to the commemoration of the 60th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. As called for in the Declaration, the organizations featured reflect their common recognition that “the inherent dignity and the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world.” Accordingly, like Chris Stout, they have dedicated themselves to global social re- sponsibility for making a difference that counts in medical care, education, sustainable development, and social Justice. Their visionary, innovative and diligent work in these various areas is educational and truly inspirational.” Corann Okorodudu, EdD, Professor of Psychology, Coordinator for Africana Studies, Rowan University, and a Non-Governmental Organization Representative for the Society for the Psychological Study of So- cial Issues and the American Psychological Association accredited at the United Nations “Chris E. Stout is a humanitarian's humanitarian and his fingerprints are all over the projects everywhere in the world that have to do with the relief of human misery and the enhancement of hu- man health and dignity. This new work by Professor Stout epitomizes and is a remarkable capstone to a sturdy spate of weighty works that he has published over the last decade, related to the psychology of terrorism and international conflict. During that decade he has also promoted a veritable stream of humanitarian projects of healing at the most troubled places of human suffering around the world. This three volume set is the story of the humanitarian institutions with which he is familiar; and that are the sources and instruments of intervention into gross human need worldwide. Here we have the rich and engrossing narratives of Herculean human efforts to address in definitive and enduring ways such unimaginable world terrors as human torture, AIDS, starvation, psychological illness, medical emergencies, internecine and tribal conflicts, illiteracy, human rights violations, and issues jeopardizing amnesty. Every little girl violated in international sex trade, every child orphaned by AIDS or neglected by drug addicted parents, every parent who has lost a son to another armed conflict, can thank Chris E. Stout directly for large and costly solutions to these problems now being successfully implemented everywhere in the world that they are needed.” J. Harold Ellens, PhD, Research Scholar, University of Michigan, author, The Destructive Power of Relig- ion, Psychology “Chris Stout is one of those rare idealists who puts his values into practice. During my years as chief executive officer of the American Psychological Association, I had many occasions to talk with Chris about his humanitarian activities, and I have always come away astonished at the energy and commitment he has devoted to the causes he believes in. The three volumes of The New Humanitari- ans demonstrate that there are other social entrepreneurs who, like Chris, are making a difference in the world.” Raymond D. Fowler, Ph.D. Former President and former CEO of the American Psychological Association. Professor Emeritus, University of Alabama.

  7. “In The New Humanitarians: Inspiration, Innovations and Blueprints for Visionaries, Chris Stout has given us a glimpse into the genius, motivation, toil, frustration, and success of founding – and sustain- ing – humanitarian organizations in today’s complex world. From the best-known to the unknown, and from the practical to the political, Chris Stout goes to the source to learn how and why 40 of these or- ganizations were formed, how war, disease, poverty, or simply neglect created the desperate needs they fill, how these organizations serve their constituents in locations that are almost always remote and dangerous, what works, and what doesn’t. These are 40 different and separate organizations, each with a founder and leader with a different vision and managerial style, but they are all driven by one goal, and that is to serve disadvantaged populations with whom they have noting in common but their humanity. Not that such lofty goals are ever easy to achieve, but Chris Stout shows the reader how these goals were sought by a handful of hard-working and dedicated visionaries.” Harvey J. Langholtz, PhD, is the Director of the United Nations Institute for Training and Research, and Associate Professor, the College of William & Mary. “The intractable problems of our global community require blended solutions with comple- mentary actions, whereby individuals and organizations fully embrace sustainable development, social entrepreneurship, and cross-cutting, interdisciplinary collaboration. Stout's The New Humanitarians describes innovative and actionable approaches to building a better world as envisioned and imple- mented by 40 progressive organizations. The stories are diverse but all share a vision of creativity and passion for finding new ways to approach old problems and create opportunities that alleviate suffer- ing, cultivate human dignity, and effect positive social change.” Leigh W. Jerome, Ph.D. President & CEO, The Institute for Triple Helix Innovation “Einstein taught us all that today’s problems cannot be solved at the same level of thinking we were at when we created them. The convergence of a more socially conscious business community on one hand and a more entrepreneurially driven philanthropic community on the other is perhaps the greatest source of inspiration as we chart the course ahead in these interesting but yet challenging times. I have followed Dr Stout’s work for several years and his passion and knowledge of the new humanitarians is as inspiring as it is important. His book is an important guide for anyone that wants to understand the emerging rules of a more humane version of entrepreneurship.” Mats Lederhausen, is founder of BE-CAUSE, one of Crain’s Chicago Business’ “40 under 40”and Chair- man of the board for the not-for-profit Business for Social Responsibility. “The New Humanitarians covers an eclectic list of organizations; each chapter is different, well written, interesting and a great inspiration.” Matthew Cadbury, MS, MBA, is currently Managing Director of Bottle-to-go and former Managing Di- rector of Cadbury Schweppes Plc in India.
