  1. Hip Replacement surgery www.kneeandjointsurgery.com

  2. Hip replacement surgery is a procedure in which a doctor surgically removes a painful hip joint with arthritis and replaces it with an artificial joint often made from metal and plastic components. It usually is done when all other treatment options have failed to provide adequate pain relief. • Hip replacement surgery is a safe and effective procedure that can relieve your pain, increase motion, and help you get back to enjoying normal, everyday activities.

  3. How long does it take to do a hip replacement • The actual surgery usually lasts from 1-2 hours, plus another 1-2 hours for prep and recovery in the operating room. The length of the surgery depends on your health and medical needs, as well your size. Larger patients with more hip problems require longer surgical time.

  4. How does a hip replacement work • Total hip replacement surgery uses metal, ceramic, or plastic parts to replace the ball at the upper end of the thighbone and resurface the hip socket in the pelvic bone. Total hip replacement surgery replaces damaged cartilage with new joint material in a step-by-step process .

  5. How long before you can drive after hip replacement • Most surgeons allow patients to drive at 4 to 6 weeks after surgery, and sometimes sooner if the operative leg is the left leg. There is some literature that states that your reaction time will not be back to normal prior to 6 weeks.

  6. Exercise after hip replacement • Lie on your side with hips and knees bent and a pillow between your knees. • Keep your feet together. • Do not twist or use your back muscles. • Lift the top knee off the pillow like a clam shell opening. • Hold for a count of 3 to 5 and slowly lower the knee to the pillow.

  7. Rehab after hip replacement • Physical therapy is extremely important in the overall outcome of any joint replacement surgery. The goals of physical therapy are to prevent contractures, improve patient education, and strengthen muscles around the hip joint through controlled exercises.

  8. What not to do after hip replacement surgery • Sports and Exercise. Continue to do the exercises prescribed by your physical therapist for at least 2 months after surgery. In some cases, your doctor may recommend riding a stationary bicycle to help maintain muscle tone and keep your hip flexible.
