  • Carbon nanotubes due to their sub atomic size have unusual and unique properties.

  • Their composite layers are transparent so they can be the best field emitters due to their high electrical conductivity.

  • CNT-based transparent conductive films can be used in the touch screens for portable computers, cell phones, personal digital LCD displays, plastic solar cells, organic LED lighting, and many others.

  • Their high tensile strength can be used for bullet-resistant combat jackets.

  • The potential contribution of nanotechnology in the medical sector is extremely broad and includes new diagnostic tools, imaging agents and methods, drug delivery systems and pharmaceuticals, therapies, implants and tissue engineering constructs.

  • From microelectronics and bio-industries we have miniaturized devices for diagnostics in vitro such as biosensors, micro arrays and LOCs, – “Lab On a Chip”.

  • Their semi conducting properties can be used to build transistors with extremely high performance.

  • Nanotubes give also a solution to thermal management problems for the semiconductor industry.

  • Due to very high thermal conductivity nanotubes are used as heat sinks.

  • The carbon nanotubes covered electrodes can increase the power stored in capacitors and rechargeable batteries in the ratio of some orders etc.

Project description

  • Before study the applications of nanotechnology the students will be introduced to the nanotechnology with several lecture presentations and they also will be able to visit nonomaterial’s laboratory to attend the nanofabrication and diagnostic processes.

  • The final result of the project will be a Concept Design or Feasibility Study of one of Nano-Products (or Systems) potentially being implemented and resulted in product manufacturing in the scope of 5 -10 years.

  • The project is an interdisciplinary problem based on diverse skills.


Learning outcomes from the project subject area are

  • Understanding a potential influence of innovative nano-materials and products on diverse and revolutionary use,

  • Ability of the state-of-the-art study for particular technologies,

  • Ability of building the Concept Design or Feasibility Study for one or more of Nano-systems applications,

  • Ability of making a SWOT and economic assessment of proposed options,

  • Ability to create own new proposals and to evaluate perspectives of their commercialisation.


Learning outcomes from the team working are

  • Skills of precise definition of the problem,

  • Ability to be creative within the group,

  • Ability to manage and effectively participate in the discussion,

  • Ability of planning of the work,

  • Ability to motivate members of the group etc.

Project subject area is within two Research Projects of NCBiR and Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education:

1."Plasma System of Continuous Synthesis of Carbon Nanotubes on Moving Substrate”

2. “Influence of External Magnetic Field on Arc Plasma Properties Related to Effective Synthesis of Carbon Nanotubes”
