  1. US MEXICAN WAR By: Faith Earl and Morgan Mastrogiacomo

  2. James K. Polk was the United States president during this war.

  3. Why Go to War? • Mexico and US were 2 countries with completely opposite views. • US confidently expanded westward • Mexico had trouble controlling the vast land they had • Dispute over US annexing Mexico’s land • US could benefit from trade routes in Mexico

  4. ….And the War Begins • April 25th, 1846 Mexico cavalry attacks US soldiers on disputed land • May 13th, 1846 Congress declares war • Mexico never officially declared war • First major conflict caused by “Manifest Destiny”

  5. The End & The Aftermath • War chiefly fought on foreign soil • Mexico suffers the loss • Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo ends war • Mexico loses about ½ of its land

  6. Perspectives on the War • Mexican felt the US was wrong. They felt like it was an invasion, in fact in their history this event was called the US invasion. They never officially declared war on the US. • President Polk in favor of war • Mexican government was the reason we invaded because it left no other alternative for defending national security. • Congress officially declares war on Mexico • Whigs opposed the war • Colonists wanted to be involved • Southern slave owners want expansion of territory

  7. How Do We Feel? We agree with President James Polk because the Mexicans started the war by attacking us on April 25th. If they hadn’t have done that then maybe we wouldn’t have felt like our nation was threatened. They really left us no choice in defending our security.

  8. Was There Social Bias? We don’t think that social bias played a part in this event. There was no racism or classism involved. All we wanted was to expand our land westward, and take control of California. It didn’t necessarily matter to us what country it was as long as they were weaker than us.

  9. Who Benefited? • American benefitted because we gained land and suffered less of a loss than Mexico • America was much stronger than Mexico
