  3. Who are the Elks? • An order with nearly a million members and a 150-year history. Founded in 1868. • More than 2,000 Elks Lodges across the country. • A generous charitable foundation that each year gives: • millions in scholarships • an inspiration to youth • a friend to veterans • and much more.

  9. Elks High School Awards • Elks Teenager of the Month • One student selected each month • Family –Style Dinners held at the Lodge throughout the year with students , their families, and school personnel.

High School Youth Opportunities • Elks Teenager of the Month (cont’) • How to Apply? • Visit your counselor’s office to pick up an application, download off the school webpage or contact our lodge office. • Give completed application to your counselor (don’t forget to include a photo) . • 2019 Teenagers of the Year: Nipomo – Taylor Robertson and Jaime Rodriguez CCNT – Riley Stewart

CHEA Scholarships • CHEA is the state organization for California and Hawaii Elk Lodges. • Sponsors several youth activities (including scholarships) • Also coordinates the major project for CA and Hawaii Elks (Purple Pig) • Supports children with disabilities • Funds 32 paid therapists and preschool vision screeners • Over 10,000 therapist screenings and 43,000 vision screenings have been performed

California-Hawaii Elks (CHEA) State Scholarships • Vocational Grant Program -Open to high school seniors and other prospective students looking to obtain training or retraining to compete in the workforce -Grant is for 1 academic year, with option to renew for another year. -Range from $500 to $2,000

  18. California-Hawaii Elks (CHEA) Scholarships (cont’) • Examples of approved training programs include: • fire science • police academy • licensing nursing • electrical training • veterinary technology • Applications accepted year around

California-Hawaii Elks (CHEA) Scholarships (cont’) • Undergraduate Scholarship Program for Students with Disabilities • Have a physical, neurological, visual, hearing impairments, and/or speech language disorder. Be a senior in high school. • 20-30 scholarship given annually and range between $1,000 to $2,000 each (renewable for up to 4 years). • Application available starting November 15 and due March 15 (typically).

ENF Scholarships • What is the ENF? • The Elks National Foundation is the Charitable Arm of the Elks organization • California and Hawaii alone receive around half a million dollars each year for Major Projects, Youth Programs and Scholarships • The second largest private provider of scholarship funds to deserving students…second only to Bill Gates.

ENF Scholarships • Emergency Educational Grant (EEG) • Provides financial assistance to children of deceased or totally disabled Elks, who wish to obtain or further their college education. • Grants can range up to $4,000 • Scholarship Deadline – available between May 1 and October 31 of the academic year assistance is desired. Application is available on the ENF Webpage: http://www.elks.org/scholars/scholarships/Eefgrants.cfm

  24. ENF Scholarships • Legacy Grant • Legacy Awards are $4,000 scholarships for children and grandchildren of Elks members. • The Foundation will offer a total of 300 awards in the 2019-20 contest. • Application Deadline – January 31, 2020 Application also available on the ENF webpage

  25. ENF Scholarships • Most Valuable Student Scholarship (MVS) • Scholarship contest open to any high school senior who’s a US Citizen. You don’t need to have a family member who’s an Elk. • Applicants will be judged on scholarship, leadership, and financial need. • Application Deadline – November 5. • Application is completed and submitted online

ENF MVS Scholarship • November 5, 2019 – Application Deadline • December 2019 – Local Lodge Judging • January 2020 – District Judging (State Finalists notified and additional information required) • February 2020 – State Judging (nationalists notified) – If you win state, minimum amount earned: $4,000 • March 2020 – National Judging-Top 20 attend leadership weekend in Chicago (Apr. 23-26).

  40. Scholarship Tips • Quality Over Quantity • Print Application Out, Read it, and make corrections • Have a friend/parent read over the essay and point out any misspellings, bad grammar and logic issues • Scholarship & Essay should tell a story • Completeness – Triple check the application!

Scholarship Tips • Scholarship applications are an opportunity to brag (in a good way) • Personal statement should show humility and describe a journey towards accomplishment • Form drafts/ideas before compiling the final form • Give counselors and teachers plenty of advance notice to compose a letter of recommendation.

  42. Scholarship Tips (cont’) • Interview Tips • Always come into an interview with a notebook and questions to ask the interview panel • Research the organization before the interview • Think before you speak (and when you speak, start slowly) • Good smile
