Use this strategy when you answer any questions that go along with a text that you have read.

Always answer your question in a complete sentence.

• You sentence should restate the question.
• Example: Q: How old is the boy? A: The boy is 13 years old.
• Cite the page or paragraph number where you find your answer. Use the author’s name when possible.

Examples

• “According to the text on page….”
• “According to the text in paragraph….”
• “The author, Walter Dean Myers, says on page…..’
• “The author, Walter Dean Myers, says in paragraph…..”
EXTEND! ELABORATE! SUPPORT!

Extend, elaborate, support, and synthesize your answer by:

• Making connections
• Making predictions
• Making inferences
• Drawing Conclusions
