  1. Lesson 8-3 Scientific Notation

  2. Definition • Scientific Notation - A number is expressed in scientific notation when it is written as a product of a factor and a power of 10. The factor must be greater than 1 and less than 10.

  3. Scientific to Standard Notation • 2.45 x 108 Move the decimal point to the right • 3 x 10-5 Move the decimal point to the left.

  4. Express each number in standard form.

  5. Standard to Scientific Notation • 30,500,000 Move the decimal point to the left • 0.000781 Move the decimal point to the right.

  6. Express each number in scientific notation.

  7. The graph shows chocolate and candy sales during a recent holiday season. • Express the sales of candy canes, chocolates, and all candy in standard notation. • Write each of these numbers in scientific notation.

  8. The Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association reported that in 2000, women spent $4.4 billion on 124 million pairs of shoes. Men spent $8.3 billion on 169 million pairs of shoes. • Express the numbers of pairs of shoes sold to women, pairs sold to men, and total spent by both men and women in standard notation. • Write each of these numbers in scientific notation.

  9. Evaluate (5 x 10-8)(2.9 x 102). Express the result in scientific notation and standard form. • Multiplication with Scientific Notation (5 x 10-8)(2.9 x 102). = (5 x2.9)(10-8 x 102). = 14.5 x 10-6 = (1.45 x 101) x 10-6 = 1.45 x (101 x 10-6) = 1.45 x 10-5 or 0.0000145

  10. Evaluate (7 x 10-6)(4.3 x 1012) Express the result in scientific notation and standard form. • Multiplication with Scientific Notation

  11. Evaluate Express the result in scientific notation and standard form. • Division with Scientific Notation = 0.245 x 104 = (2.45 x 10-1) x 104 = 2.45 x (10-1 x 104) = 2.45 x 103 or 2450

  12. Division with Scientific Notation
