Warm Up: Reciprocal Reading • Discussing careers is an important concept that you must start thinking about. • Read the Wall Street Journal Article • In your groups, complete a read-aloud by having one person at a time read specific sections of the article. Every person must read! • As you read underline, highlight, or circle some important points and statements that the article presents to you that help you understand the topic better, use these when you write. • Once finished complete the four parts of the reciprocal reading entry handout. Write in full and complete sentences.

Warm Up: Group Write • Discussing careers is an important concept that you must start thinking about. • Read the Wall Street Journal Article • In your groups, complete a read-aloud by having one person at a time read specific sections of the article. Every person must read! • As the reading progresses I will stop all groups from time to time to discuss what is being read and to also have you answer questions related to the reading. • Once finished complete the four parts of the journal entry handout. Write in full and complete sentences.

Think/Organize/Share: How Many Careers (Jobs) Exist??? • Group Activity (10 – 15 minutes) • Working in your groups and with your group partners, you will be given poster paper and markers. • You will be working together to figure out what kinds of jobs and careers you know already exist and as a group you will create a list. You will also create a personal preference list of jobs that you do not want to have. • Follow the set up for your poster on the next slide

Questions To Consider… • After completing the group activity, with your group look back over your poster list of careers and answer the two questions as a group below. • What do you need to do right now to ensure that you find and get a good career in the future? Explain. • With so many jobs existing today, what are problems you see that could occur or exist with there being so many jobs?

  10. Profile of A Worker • Four Areas You Must Consider When Choosing A Career… • Abilities • Interests • Work Preferences • Values • All are based on you and are different from everyone else.

  11. Profile 1: Abilities • Your abilities are the things you can do well. • Examples: • Cook • Fix Items • Good Grades in a Subject

  12. Profile 2: Interests • Your interests are things you like and enjoy doing. • Examples: • Hobbies • Music • Sports

  13. Profile 3: Work Preferences • Your work preferences are your feelings about your job activities and working conditions. • Examples: • Work with someone or alone • Be the boss or be bossed • Work with hands or machines

  14. Profile 4: Values • Your values are beliefs and ideas important to you. • Examples: • Long/Short Hours • High/Low Salary • Benefits/Few Benefits

Personal Characteristics • Can you figure out, what can be classified as either an ability, interest, value, or preference? • Complete the Personal Characteristics page in your workbook. • Once finished, review your answers with another partner in your group and compare the answers to see if there are any differences.

  16. The Resume • What is It? • Document that contains a summary of relevant job experience and education for specific employment search. • The first item that an potential employer encounters regarding the job seeker and is typically used to screen applicants.
