  1. Using del.icio.us Bookmarks and Tags to Create a Virtual Reference Desk Mark Sanders (sandersm@ecu.edu) – East Carolina University INTRODUCTION REDESIGNED “http://del.icio.us” VIRTUAL REFERENCE DESK BEST PRACTICES AND CONCLUSIONS Social bookmarking and tagging are some of the most popular Web 2.0 trends to emerge in recent years. One of the largest social bookmarking sites is http://del.icio.us, where users can bookmark and tag websites with keyword descriptors to organize and foster discovery. At East Carolina University’s Joyner Library, the Reference Department recently migrated the Virtual Reference Desk, a static webpage of ready reference website links, to de.licio.us. The result is a more intuitive, dynamic site that invites user participation and encourages interactivity. Give careful thought to the terms used for tags. Investigate which tags other users have created. Add multiple tags and bundles to maintain a well-rounded page and functional site. Create a “link roll” to display on your library’s webpage. Encourage students to create or save the library’s bookmarks to their own page. Statistics at East Carolina University suggest the migration to del.icio.us increases webpage hits. “Link Roll” embedded in library’s webpage ECU Joyner Library’s del.icio.us page for “Country Resources” ORIGINAL “STATIC” WEBPAGE BIBLIOGRAPHY Farkas, Meredith. Step 2: Install the Del.icio.us toolbar for your browser to make saving bookmarks easier. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Step 3: Import any existing bookmarks you wish to save or simply visit websites and add them using the toolbar. I would like to thank Kendall Wooden (woodenk@ecu.edu), Library Technician and member of the Web Development Team, for his invaluable expertise creating and migrating website content to http://del.icio.us. Step 4: Add tags, create bundles of subject categories to group sites, embed the “link roll” into your library’s webpage.
