  1. A Light for the World Slide Show Series is dedicated to

  2. Pope John Paul II who was a light in our dark world

  3. Light Dawns in the Darkness Part Two

  4. Diego and Dominic returned to Spain

  5. Two years later they again went to the Marches to fetch the princess, only to find that she would not return with them

  6. In Scandanavia, however, they learned that to the east there were vast pagan territories

  7. waiting for the Gospel

  8. Consequently, on their return journey they went first to Rome

  9. They begged Pope Innocent III to let them go on the missions together but he refused, saying the bishop was needed back home.

  10. Diego, however, decided to return by way of the famous abbey

  11. at Citeaux in France

  12. Diego received the Cistercian habit there

  13. On the way back to Osma at the city of Montpellier in June 1206,

  14. Diego and Dominic met the Abbot of Citeaux and two of his monks

  15. The Cistercians had been sent by Innocent

  16. to preach against Albigensianism

  17. These three complained to Diego that they had no success in their preaching,

  18. Taking a look at the situation we see that theViscounty of Beziers-Carcassone was the strong center of the heresy

  19. Towns In 1198 the town of Lodève had robbed and maltreated its bishop

  20. In 1205 the town of Béziers had assassinated the bishop

  21. The SIZE

  22. and STRENGTH

  23. of the Castle at Carcassone

  24. can give some idea as to how powerful

  25. and strongly entrenched the heresy was

  26. Count Raymond V of Toulouse

  27. sought to arrest the spread of the heresy

  28. but acknowledged “… my strength is not sufficient to overcome so widespread and so difficult a problem, because…”

  29. “… the most important nobles of my land are ravaged by this disease, drawing away after them a very great multitude of men who apostatise from the faith …”

  30. His successor was Count Raymond VI who would not disturb any of his subjects for reasons of heresy

  31. so as not to weaken his power

  32. The vagueness of the link between vassal and lord

  33. forced them to recruit mercenaries.

  34. The mercenaries destroyed everything and laid waste everything.

  35. They were thought to be linked with the heretics,

  36. since they shared their hatred of the clergy.

  37. There were more than 50 co-lords at Fanjeaux

  38. Violence was deeply rooted everywhere

  39. People were very much attracted to the Catharists

  40. The “Perfect” were poor and austere and lived on alms from the people.

  41. The wealthy abbeys were a sharp contrast

  42. Diego told the Cistercians that they must not abandon their mission

  43. but must counter the Catholic clergy's bad example,

  44. by preaching as the Apostles had done, barefoot and begging.

  45. The Cistercians replied: If some person of real moral authority

  46. was willing first to show the example by preaching in this way,

  47. they would very willingly follow him.

  48. Dominic Diego offered himself. He sent horses and baggage back to Osma and dismissed his clergy. He kept with him a single companion

  49. Entering the diocese of Béziers the preachers were completely in the midst of heretical territory

  50. At Servian they engaged in pubilc debate with Thierry and others under the presidency of the local lord.
