  2. Contents What are numerals? What is a numeral system? What are some examples? More examples One more example What systems is it related to? What could be the consequences of an improper numeral system? On these pages, there is a blue button in the corner which takes you back to this page. The other button that looks like a “play” button goes to the next page.

  3. What are numerals? When we think about numbers, we basically think of 1, 2, 3, ….., right? But I’m here to prove that there’s more to it than just numbers. Numerals are numbers and numbers are digits that you can count stuff with, like how much money you have or how many foods you hate.

  4. What is a numeral system? A numeral system is a system of numerals (duh!). It should have: 1) A set of numerals 2) Every number should be different OR a same symbol no matter where it is in an equation [like 2 is always 2, no matter were it is] 3) Show the mathematical structure of the number (like, the mathematical structure of 5 could be 2 + 3 = 5).

  5. What are some examples? A few examples are the European number system: 1, 2, 3, …., the Arabic-Indic number system: ١, ٢, ٣, …., the Devanagari number system: १, २, ३, …. and the Tibetan number system: ༡, ༢, ༣, …. I think the Tibetan number system looks most like the European number system, don’t you think?

  6. More examples Some more examples of numeral systems are the Mayan numeral system, which has a dot for one and a horizontal line for 5, or the Roman numeral system, which has I for 1, V for 5, X for 10, L for 50, C for 100, D for 500 and M for 1,000 or the Egyptian numeral system, which has a vertical line for 1, an arch for 10, a curl for 100, a lily for 1,000, a finger for 10,000, a tadpole or a frog for 100,000 and a man with his hands raised for 1,000,000 or many.

  7. One more example One more example is binary, which is written in 1s and 0s. For example, “Hello, everyone!” in binary is 01001000011001010110110001101100011011110010110000100000011001010111011001100101011100100111100101101111011011100110010100100001. Computers use this numeral system to do everything, like open Google Chrome or download stuff.

  8. What systems is it related to? Numeral systems could be related to: • Maths system • Writing system • Operating / Processing system • Timekeepers • Economic system

  9. What could be the consequences of an improper numeral system? Your equations could have an entirely wrong answer, which is very consequential in some cases. You could get mixed up between what is which number.
