  1. How the Reemergence of Towns and Cities Changed Medieval Europe

  2. Medieval Towns—The Layout

  3. Guilds • group of people with same job or profession • formed to help control prices, prevent competition, and ensure quality work • They are similar to modern day labor unions

  4. The New Middle Class • The New Middle Class became powerful and wealthy • Burgesses in English • Burgers in German • Bourgeoisie in French • Supported kings • Often paid for “charters”—permission to be free and run their own affairs

  5. Slowly Breaking Feudalism • Status depended on hard work, not family connections • This challenged the system of feudalism • Many serfs ran away to live in towns

  6. Shift to the City • Society began to focus more on commerce and trade and less on agriculture • Lessened the influence of manors and lords

  7. Banks and Money Challenge Feudalism • Business in towns brought money back • Banks set up • Kings took loans from banks to raise armies • No more knights needed

  8. Living Conditions in a Medieval Town • No sewage systems or trash collection = disease was a problem • Crowded streets and wooden house = fire was a problem • No street lights—night time was dangerous • There were curfews and a night watch • Towns gates shut at night
