  1. CHARACTERIZATION Day 3 – Character Analysis

  2. Characterization is a technique authors use to show or tell you about their characters. • As you all remember, there are how many types of characterization? • Think of a characteristic as an adjective or a description • A characteristic is not a summary of action, dialogue, or thought. Reviewing Characterization

  3. Now we’re going to build on that knowledge in order to ANALYZE characterization. • Discovering an example of the characterization in a text • By finding a place where the author tells you about the character • or by finding a place where the character is conversing or being talked about, taking action, or thinking about something.  • Then asking yourself what that example tells you about the character (is he brave, friendly, etc.) • PS: WE’VE ALREADY WORKED ON THIS! We did this in our group work yesterday. Analyzing Characterization

  4. Step1: Find a place in the text where the author tells you about the character. • Step 2: ask yourself what that example tells you about the character (is he brave, friendly, etc.) Literary Analysis: Direct Characterization

  5. Step 1:find a place where the character is conversing or is being talked about. Find a place where the character is taking action. Or Find a place where the character is thinking about something.  • Step 2: ask yourself what that example tells you about the character (is he brave, friendly, etc.) Literary Analysis: Indirect Characterization

  6. Terence works harder with his mouth than with his broom. “That’s right! Throw another gum wrapper! You’re a model citizen! Freak!” Mostly though, he takes endless bathroom breaks at the Starbucks on the corner. • Based on the passage, what is a characteristic of Terence? • How do we figure this out from the paragraph? What type of characterization is it? Example of Analysis from The Juvie Three

  7. Directions • Write down as many characteristics as you can find. • Circle and number in the passage where you found support for those characteristics. • Finally, identify the place you circled as an example of Direct (narrative), or indirect characterization and explain why. • If indirect, tell me if it’s based on thoughts, actions, or dialogue. Practice in Pairs!

  8. 1. Mom and Dad can’t call or email or even write letters. For the next six months, Arjay might as well be dead. Yesterday, he scribbled doing fine--don’t worry on a postcard of the Empire State Building and addressed it to home. But he couldn’t bring himself to mail it. He knew that if he had, he would have been risking his one chance to get his life back. 2. It was hard enough for Gecko and Arjay to get their homework done. Sitting on Terence and making him work sucked every ounce of energy out of them. It usually came down to physical violence, and keeping a fight like that quiet took even more energy than the fight itself. Practice in Pairs

  9. Read “The Driving Lesson” • On the backside of the essay • Write down 4 characteristics of the old man • Circle and number in the essay where you found support for those characteristics. • Finally, identify the place you circled as an example of Direct (narrative), or indirect characterization and explain why. • If indirect, tell me if it’s based on thoughts, actions, or dialogue. Checking for Understanding
