  16. Councils Who Are Involved • Council of Carpenters. • Bricklayers and Allied Crafts. • Plumbers and Steamfitters Local. • International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.

  17. An Example Of A Labor Union Involvement • Council of Carpenters. • Coming out to the facilities to meet with the students. • Regional Board of Directors agreed to work with us. • Has four options for entrance into apprentice program. • Requirements on our end.

  18. An Example Of A Labor Union Involvement • Council of Carpenters (cont). • Has four options for entranced into their apprentice program. 1) Job Corp. 2) Off the street. 3) Helmets to Hard Hats. 4) Sponsorship by a contractor. ***KCTCS corrections education student.

An Example Of A Labor Union Involvement • Council of Carpenters (cont). • Basic details of program. 1) On-the-job training. 2) Pay dues of $22.00 per month. 3) Annual 40 hours at the Training Center. 4) Minimum of 650 hours with each contractor. 5) Complete three college classes – Human Relations, Labor History, and Technical Writing. a) Relates to CDP academic integration.

An Example Of A Labor Union Involvement • Council of Carpenters (cont). • Requirements on our end. • Must have a GED or high school diploma. • Concerns with a particular felony charge. 3) Develop communication and math skills. 4) Prefer applicants in KCTCS Construction Technology program. 5) OSHA 10-hour card.

An Example Of A Labor Union Involvement • Council of Carpenters (cont). • Benefits for the applicant. • Wages start at 60% (or 50% in Ashland area) of journeyman scale. • Receive a 5% every six months. • Provides hotel rooms and mileage for those living 75 miles or more from the Training Center. • Basic benefits are included.

  22. What Councils Are Saying • Not impressed with NCCER curriculum. • Do not want sex offenders. • Concerned with “no shows”. • Have discussed articulation agreements. • Views the KCTCS curriculum as an up-to-date and solid training program.

  23. An Example Of An Employer’s Involvement • Student from Northpoint. • Case worker called – individual was scheduled to be released in two days. • Had experience in the food industry. • Wanted to locate in Lexington. • Arranged an interview with Chili’s.

  24. An Example Of A Non-Profit Agency Involvement • Student from Northpoint. • Lexington Rescue Mission. 1) Health clinic. 2) Housing services. 3) Employment services.

  25. An Example Of Offenders Continuing Their Education • Two more individuals into BCTC. • One was a returning student. • One was a first time to an outside school.

  26. Where To Go From Here • Get DOC involved. • Continue to build linkages with agencies. • Continue to build linkages with employers. • Class d offenders and others into the program.

  27. Where To Go From Here (cont.) • Seek more funding for transitional services. 1) JEHT Foundation grant. 2) Distance learning grant. 3) OSHA-related funding. 4) Legislative. 5) Canteen funding. 6) KCTCS funding.
