In 2002 an $8.6 billion program was supposed to bring new schools to cities around the state to reduce disparity between suburban and urban children. Homes were destroyed to make room for the $27 million New University High School for 1,000 Newark students on Hawthorne Avenue and Dewey Street.  Then three years later the Schools Construction Corporation ran out of money and 207 school projects across the state were cancelled including the New University High School.
