Why Women Suffer from Depression More Than Men

  1. Why Women Suffer from Depression More Than Men

  2. For many who are dealing with difficult times in their life, feeling sad is nothing more than a typical reaction, and usually, it passes in time. When it comes to depression, however, this can have severe symptoms that take over your entire life, from how you feel, to how you think, sleep, eat and work. More common in women than men, experts believe this is probably due to certain biological, hormonal and social factors experienced uniquely by women. Let’s look at depression a little more closely: Depression is very much a real medical condition While common, there can be no doubt that depression is serious, and while its causes are still being studied, the fact that it’s a real and treatable medical condition, remains undisputed.

  3. Depression requires professional treatment Snapping out of depression or trying harder to feel happier, simply doesn’t work – at least not long term – and treatment in the form of medication or counseling, or a combination of both, is almost always needed to help the individual feel better. If you think you might be depressed, getting a diagnosis quickly can help you go on to lead a fuller, happier life much sooner, and once a healthcare provider has carried out a thorough evaluation of you and your symptoms (including a physical exam, interview and lab tests), you’ll be presented with your treatment options, which may include medication and sessions with a psychotherapist.

  4. What types of depression are unique to women? When women are pregnant, after they’ve given birth (the postpartum period), when they’re perimenopausal, and when they’re menstruating, they may experience significant physical and hormonal changes that would be completely alien to men, and certain types of depression can occur at different stages of a woman’s life. • Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) While less common than PMS, it is more severe, and this serious condition can cause any number of debilitating symptoms, from irritability and anger, to a depressed mood, intense feelings of sadness and thoughts of suicide, to joint or muscle pain along with changes to the appetite and bloating.

  5. Perinatal depression From morning sickness and weight gain to dramatic mood swings, being pregnant, giving birth and then caring for a new life is challenging, to say the least. The baby blues are incredibly common, but they usually dissipate or disappear altogether after a few weeks, while perinatal depression is not so easy to overcome.

  6. A mood disorder affecting women while pregnant or once they’ve given birth, perinatal depression is far more serious than the baby blues, and can include depression that starts during pregnancy (prenatal depression) or after the baby is born (postpartum depression). Mothers suffering from this may experience a range of extreme emotions, from sadness to anxiety, and feel so fatigued and lethargic that they’re unable to function on an everyday basis. Pregnancy, childbirth, raising a baby, and sometimes, just being a woman in what is still very much a man’s world, can be incredibly difficult to cope with, and if you’re a woman struggling with feelings that you can’t control and which are preventing you from leading a normal, healthy life, please seek help from a mental health professional as soon as possible.
