  1. Moving Through Grief; What to Do When the Pain Won’t Subside

  2. When you experience the loss of a loved one, the support of family and friends can help you manage your grief, and even though you might benefit from seeking therapy, you may not choose to do so. Believing that the grieving process is typically a long one, and that it’s normal to experience grief for a prolonged period after a loss, is often the reason why many people don’t seek therapy for their bereavement. However, if you’re struggling to move on through the grieving process, and are finding that your sense of loss has become overwhelming despite support from friends and family, counseling can almost certainly help you, and here’s why:

  3. Resolving your loss While friends and family can offer comfort and support throughout the grieving process, this may not be enough to help you resolve your loss, move through those feelings, and move on. Moving on is the primary goal after the loss of a loved one, but this doesn’t mean that you’re not still missing that person, it simply means that your own life can carry on without you feeling consumed by grief, and this process can be expedited with the help of professional counseling.

  4. Early loss If you’ve experienced a significant loss early on in your life, as a toddler or young child, this can go on to trigger other losses, especially those that haven’t yet been completely resolved. This occurs due to the interconnectivity of the brain, and how all of our experiences are mapped out via neuropathways. Early losses tend to have a much more significant impact on us because our sense of self has not yet developed, and the brain is a lot more impressionable during those formative years. Powerful early experiences of loss can make it more difficult to reach and express your feelings later on in life, and can affect you deeply when you experience loss as an adult.

  5. How loss impacts the nervous system Whether it’s a sudden loss or any other that you experience, your nervous system can become overwhelmed and cause you to become so physiologically aroused that you move outside of your comfort zone or window of tolerance. You may even begin to feel anger that was never resolved all those years ago.

  6. Seeking professional help There’s no doubt that comfort and support from friends and family can be immensely helpful if you’re grieving, and being around others who are more grounded, can help you regulate your emotions and cope better with the loss. But for some, it simply isn’t enough to help them move on, and gradually, those friends and family will begin to feel helpless as they witness the individual struggling to cope with everyday life, or even falling into a deep depression.

  7. Fortunately, if your grief simply won’t subside, there are professional therapists and counselors who can help you find ways to manage your feelings and move through the intense sense of loss that you’re experiencing. The pain of losing someone you held dear can seem insurmountable, but you don’t need to go through it alone, and you can move through your grief. Most importantly, counseling can help the pain subside, and while the memory of your loved one will remain, you’ll be able to move on with your life, as they, no doubt, would have wanted you to.
