  1. Preparation, Planning & Design • Evaluate needs – Reduce power consumption and power costs • Evaluate current usage – identify current computer and power usage • Identify area where improvement may occur • Identify where improvements need to occur • Organize quotes then evaluate which one meets the required needs

  2. ICT Sustainability from a business standpoint • Renewable resources – Printing Solutions, solar power • Reducing Carbon footprint – reduction in paper used and toner cartridges • Maintaining efficiency whilst utilizing less energy and more waste efficient materials • Green Printing • Reducing waste output and energy input

  3. Energy Efficiency as a stepping stone • First step to sustainability is becoming energy efficient • Ability to reduce the overall power required to continue on your day to day business • Yet not reduce the capabilities of your technology • Enacting smart protocols for energy usage such as lights and powering off devices when not in use • Using renewable energy such as solar power or wind power to reduce the draw from un-renewable resources such as coal

  4. Project Strategy • To implement energy efficient and EPEAT Gold approved Thin clients • To reduce the class rooms overall power usage by a minimum of 20% • Implement smart power protocols to reduce further the use of power • To use equipment that reduces the carbon foot print and hazardous materials foot print within the class • Implement power monitoring tools and power usage reduction programs to monitor and identify future potential power reduction.

  5. Network Operation & Security • Network to operate only during class hours • Switch to be upgraded to Cisco Catalyst 2960 Series with POE to power the Thin clients • Switch to be configured with appropriate security measures to prevent intrusion.

  6. Recommended System

  7. Short Term Solutions • Reduce the operating hours of lights • Reduce uptime of server and computers • a cumulative saving of 110hours worth of lighting and computing for a 5.5 day week per device

  8. Energy Usage & Projected Results • 21.175% saving on power for lighting • 50.82% saving on power for computing

  9. Recomendations & Conclusion • Recommendation to reduce the hours of operation of IT Equipment • By utilising smart software such as the EnviR monitor and the Verismic Power management Software, Will be able to monitor and analyse power consumption during peak times and model/change usage as required. • It will also allow us to forecast when/if we will have spikes in the power consumption based off previous power readings, • Will allow the Department to quantify their power usage and also calculate price of the departments power consumption.
