  2. Aims of this evening For you to gain an understanding of :- • the PGCE and GTP routes into teaching • what we can offer you • what you will need to offer teaching • the way forward

Secondary PGCE ‘Professional Certificate of Education’ • students / not employees (24 places) • no initial timetable commitment • 4 days a week in school (terms 1 & 2) • 36 weeks teaching experience in Middle and Upper schools in…. • Art, English, Geography, History, Science, Maths • £4,000 training bursary (Art & History) • £6,000 training bursary (Geog / Eng / Science) • £9,000 training bursary in Maths • Golden ‘Hello’ available in shortage subjects (£5,000 – Maths and Science)

  4. Secondary PGCE ‘Top–Up Fees’ • Since September 2006, all providers of teacher training have been charging students up to £3,225 per year in tuition fees. We will be charging £2500 – much less than most providers! • You won't have to pay anything up-front; your fees are simply added onto your student loan and are repaid when you are earning over £15,000. • Trainee teachers will get help with their fees as, in addition to the training bursary, a grant of up to £2,906 will be available from your LEA.

  5. Secondary GTP Graduate Teacher Programme • employees / not students • initial timetable commitment? (prior experience?) • full time commitment in school • 36 weeks in school • teaching experience in two schools • 24 places - 11 for ‘priority’ subjects - 13 for ‘non-priority’ subjects • £15,461 training salary (taxed! -10months pro-rata) • 10 month Training Contract – no strings ! • No Golden ‘Hello’ available - but no ‘top up‘ fees!

  6. Priority Subjects • Design & technology (including Textiles) • Food Technology • ICT • Maths • MFL • Science • Music • Religious Studies

What we can offer you Course outline – Secondary PGCE & GTP • dedicated subject mentor in school • Subject Application Lecture Course (twilight – Tuesdays or Wednesdays 4 to 6 pm) • Professional Studies Lecture Course (twilight – Thursdays 4 to 6 pm) • formative and summative profiling • range of written and seminar assignments • access to UoB Library in Bedford • excellent employment prospects

  8. What you need to offer teaching is… • a good degree in relevant subject • GCSE grade C or above in English & Maths • GCSE grade C or above in Science (for Secondary Science) • clear CRB record check / good references • experience working with young people • the ability to be open minded and reflective • the ability to take, and act upon, constructive criticism • the ability to give blood, sweat and tears ….and no sex until next summer !

The way forward … The Selection Process 2009 • Receipt of Applications deadline – Friday 15th January • Short list for interview in the week of Monday 25th January • Successful applicants informed by Friday 29th January • School based selection process will take place in the week of Monday 8th February 2010.
