  1. The Abrahamic Covenant – Genesis 15

  2. The “Cutting” of an Old Testament Covenant… “The men who have violated my covenant and have not fulfilled the terms of the covenant they made before me, I will treat like the calf they cut in two and then walked between its pieces.” - Jeremiah 34:18

  3. The Promise of an Eternal People… He took him outside and said, "Look up at the heavens and count the stars--if indeed you can count them." Then he said to him, "So shall your offspring be." - Genesis 15:5

  4. The Promise of the Land… "I am the LORD, who brought you out of Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land to take possession of it. On that day the LORD made a covenant with Abram and said, To your descendants I give this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the Euphrates-- - Genesis 15:7 ,18

  5. The Promise of a Blessing… “I will make you into a great nation and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.” - Genesis 12:2,3

  6. The Covenant is Sealed by Blood “So the LORD said to him, ‘Bring me a heifer, a goat and a ram, each three years old, along with a dove and a young pigeon.’ ” “Abram brought all these to him, cut them in two and arranged the halves opposite each other; the birds, however, he did not cut in half.” - Genesis 15:9,10

  7. Only God Passed Between the Pieces! “When the sun had set and darkness had fallen, a smoking firepot with a blazing torch appeared and passed between the pieces. On that day the LORD made a covenant with Abram…” - Genesis 15:17,18a

  8. The Covenant is Unilateral Only the parties “passing between the pieces” are swearing to keep the terms and obligations of the covenant. Abram was made to “sleep” during this ritual. He did not “pass between the pieces”. He observed it, but he was not required to fulfill any obligations in order to join in it.

  9. Unilateral Means Unconditional “…constituting or relating to a contract or engagement by which an express obligation to do or forbear is imposed on only one party”

  10. What does it all mean to believers today? • “Understand, then, that those who believe are children of Abraham. The Scripture foresaw that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, and announced the gospel in advance to Abraham: “All nations will be blessed through you.” So those who have faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith.” • It means we should rejoice with and participate in Abraham’s blessings!

  11. It means we should love Abraham’s people! “I say then, Hath God cast away his people? God forbid.” - Romans 11:1 “For since their rejection meant that God offered salvation to the rest of the world, their acceptance will be even more wonderful. It will be life for those who were dead!” - Romans 11:15

  12. It means that believers must support the Jewish people’s right to the land of Israel! "And I will give unto thee, and to thy seed after thee, the land wherein thou art a sojourner, all the land of Canaan, for an everlastingpossession; and I will be their God."‖ - Gen. 17:8

  13. It means that we should bless them also by praying for the “peace of Jerusalem”! “Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: May those who love you be secure. May there be peace within your walls and security within your citadels. For the sake of my brothers and friends, I will say, ‘Peace be within you.’ For the sake of the house of the LORD our God, I will seek your prosperity.” - Psalm 122:6-9
