  7. Herbert Karliner • Herbert had three siblings and his parents were among the 937 Jews who were boarding the S.S. Lois in Hamburg , Germany on a balmy spring day on 1939. They were bound for what they thought was a new life in Cuba and eventually the United States . Although the children were looking forward to this new adventure, Herbert could tell his parents were unhappy because they were forced to leave Germany or face DEATH.

  8. The first hint of trouble was in the soccer field. Herbert loved soccer and was one of the best center forward in all of Peiskrescham, Germany. His classmates marveled at the way he could weave down field so cleverly that he’d leave defenders sprawled on the ground . Although every day after school , Herbert would play soccer with his friends. But in 1938, shortly before he turned twelve, he began to notice that instead of going after the ball, the defenders were elbowing him in the ribs, knocking him down, and deliberately kicking him in the shins.

  9. Definitions • Deliberately-Done with or marked by full consciousness of the nature and effects; intentional: mistook the oversight for a deliberate insult. • Defenders-to ward off attack from; guard against assault or injury (usually fol. by from or against): The sentry defended the gate against sudden attack.
