  1. CORE Program Paint Types & Manufacture MPI Training Review

  2. Introduction PAINT TYPES Generally paint types are divided into two classes: • Architectural Coatings • Industrial Coatings Architectural Coatings can then be divided into: • Solvent-based (often alkyd coatings) • Water-based (often latex coatings) MPI Training Review

  3. Introduction Coatings Manufacture Three elements of coatings manufacture will be discussed • Batches • Equipment • Quality Control MPI Training Review

  4. Paint Types • The following types or categories of paint can be found in the MPI Approved Products List. • Aluminum Paint • Anti-Fouling Paint • Anti-Graffiti Coating • Baked Enamel • Base-coat/Clear-coat • Block Filler MPI Training Review

  5. Paint Types • Coil Coating • Conversion Coating • Elastomeric • Enamel • Filler • Fire-retardant Coatings • Hammertone • High Build • HiPAC MPI Training Review

  6. Paint Types • High Solids • Lacquer • Latex Paint • Metal Flake or Metallic • Metal Primer • Multicolor • Powder Coating • Primers (anti-corrosive primers, galvanized metal primers, vinyl wash primers, wash primer, zinc-rich primer MPI Training Review

  7. Paint Types • Primer-Sealer • Primer-Surfacer • Sealer • Sanding sealer • Shellac • Shop Coat • Stipple Paints • Stove Finishing • Texture Undercoat MPI Training Review

  8. Paint Types • Undercoater • Varnish • Varnish Stain • Water Repellant • Wrinkle Paint MPI Training Review

  9. Coatings Manufacture Batches • Paints are usually produced in batches. • The size of each batch varies with the type of product, manufacturing method and consumer demand. • Batches range from: • e.g. 500 – 10,000 gallons of latex paint • or 100 – 200 gallons of blue gloss enamel MPI Training Review

  10. Coatings Manufacture • Each batch of paint has a “batch card or ticket”. • This will list the : • Specific material • Weight • Volume • And order of addition • Manufacturing procedure and • Process tests • Areas are left for comments from the batch maker or quality control person. MPI Training Review

  11. Coatings Manufacture • Special Note: • Each batch is given a specific “BATCH NUMBER”. • Material form a single batch should be used on a job. • In no case should material from a different batch be used for “touch-up”. MPI Training Review

  12. Coatings Manufacture Equipment: • Paint manufacturers use a variety ofequipment to produce paint products. • The most important process is the dispersal of pigments (maximize the efficiency for color, hiding & gloss). • This equipment must reduce the aggregated dry pigment to its primary particle size. MPI Training Review

  13. Coatings Manufacture Equipment: • Most common piece of equipment – High Speed Disperser • Other machines used for dispersing : • Ball milling • Kinetic Disperser • Stone Mill • Sand or Bead Mill MPI Training Review
