  1. Can You Measure Up? An introductory lesson on units of measure

  2. How did standard measures develop? As people began to trade, they realized that it was important for everyone to understand how much a measurement was to avoid confusion.

  3. Why is standard measuring important? Back in the old days, people would use their bodies to measure. One part of their body they would use is their feet. Do you see how this could be a problem?

  4. Common Modern Units for Measuring Length Customary: inches, feet, yards, miles inches centimeters Metric: millimeters, centimeters, meters, kilometers

  5. You can use the customary or metric units of length to measure objects of many different sizes.

  6. Which unit of measure would you use to measure the length of these objects? Inches Millimeters Feet Miles or Kilometers Centimeters Yards

  7. We use the same units of measure when measuring distances. How far do we have to walk? How far is it to the moon? How far do we have to drive?

  8. Construction workers use units of measure when building.

  10. Weight is a measure of the heaviness of an object due to the pull of gravity.

  13. Haveyou ever wondered what your weight would be on other planets? If you weigh 50 pounds on Earth, then… if you traveled to Pluto you would weigh 3.3 lbs on Mars you would weigh 18.8 lbs if you went to Neptune you would weigh 56.2 lbs on Jupiter you would weigh a whopping 118.2 lbs

  20. Temperature is the degree of heat within a body, object or environment.

  21. Examples of Measuring Temperature Do you feel feverish? Is your food too hot or too cold?

  22. Measuring Weather Conditions How hot or cold will it be today? How much rain will fall? Will you need a rain coat, heavy coat or no coat?
