  1. 1pSPc3 This is an attempt to make a B-format capable of making better sound in headphone listening than the original B-format. Introduction Performance in headphone listening B-Format for binaural listening of higher order Ambisonics Objective evaluation – ILD and IPD As mobile devices become prevalent, people often use earphones or headphones to listen to audio. Higher order Ambisonics (HOA) can in general create better spatial impression than B-format . HRTFs of KEMAR Proposed B-format Conventional B-format Correlation Original 1st order 9th order 4th order Interaural Level Difference (ILD) It would be useful to develop an audio format which is compatible with conventional B-format and yet able to convey good spatial information when it is listened to through earphones or headphones. Interaural Phase Difference (IPD) Better reproduction than conventional B-format From recording to playback Subjective evaluation – sound localization Earphone/Headphone B-format recording [1] B-format Localization on the horizontal plane [1] HOA Performance in loudspeaker listening Ryouichi Nishimura (NICT) and Kotaro Sonoda (Nagasaki Univ.) B-format t = 4T/5 t = 3T/5 t = 2T/5 t = T/5 t = 0 [1’] Loudspeaker 500 Hz [2] Binaural Conventional path Original sound wave to be reproduced Proposed path 2 m Formulation 2 m Conventional B-format signal Binaural signal: B-format signal: Reproduction of a sinusoidal sound wave with four loudspeakers. Proposed B-format signal Head-related transfer functions: Inferior reproduction than conventional B-format Notations Conclusion [1] M. Noisterniget al., AES 24th International Conference on Multichannel Audio (2003) For earphone/headphone listening, a B-format signal can convey as good spatial impression as higher order Ambisonics, at a sacrifice of the quality in reproducing the sound with loudspeakers. Spherical harmonic functions: [2] Minimum Norm Solution Same as [1] but with a larger number of (virtual) loudspeakers and HOA [1’] This work was partly supported by JSPS KAKENHI Grant Number 23500162
