Parrots are forest birds - they eat seeds, nuts, fruits and berries and a few eat insects and nectar. They have very thick bills and fleshy little tongues which allow them to crack and eat hard-shelled nuts.
Parrots are great birds, you can have them as pets or go visit them in different parts of Australia.
Over all there are 315 species of parrots in the world, the ones I’m showing you today are all Australian.
Because parrots were captured for pets, many of them are endangered close to extinction because of this. It is no longer legal to have endangered species and parrots are now being protected world-wide.
Where: South-East Tasmania and mainland Australia
Eats: Nuts and nectar
Fact: These parrots migrate to and fro from mainland Australia and Tasmania depending on the weather.

Where: Sydney, National parks
Eats: Nuts, berries and tiny shrubs.
Fact: They do everything in groups even if it’s just a pair
Rare? = yes
Australian King parrot
Where: All along the East coast of Australia
Eats: Seeds, berries, fruit, nuts, nectar, blossoms and leaf buds.
Fact: These are the only parrots who have a head that’s completely red.
Rare? = no
Where: Central and Western Australia
Eats: Seeds, fruit and variable vegetables.
Fact: Alexandra parrots fly very low to the ground but can fly for a very long time.
RARE? = No
Where: West and South Australia
Eats: flowers and insects
Fact: The Regent Parrot lays its eggs in hollow branches or holes in large old or dead trees near water.
RARE? = no
Where: North - East Australia
Eats: eucalyptus, fruit, flowers and insects.
Fact: They don’t move very much, they usually stay in their home.

How to look after them
Parrots are not hard to look after and depending on how you look after them they will have different personalities.
Parrots are the sweetest things ever. Look after them nicely, I know because my cousins have two Swift parrots.
