PROMETEA

This European Commission-funded project aims to understand gender issues in engineering and technology research and propose measures to empower women engineers. It explores gender dynamics in different engineering organizations and examines the impact of organizational cultures on male and female careers. The project also evaluates measures of excellence in engineering research and identifies good practices in promoting gender equality. The core partners and associate partners involved in PROMETEA contribute expertise from various countries.

  1. PROMETEA EmPoweRing WOMen Engineers in IndusTrial and Academic ResEArch Funded by the European Commission –6th FP "Structuring the European Research Area Science and Society“ Area "Women and Science " Contract: No. 017660 Duration :November 2005 - December 2007

  2. THE PROJECT AIMS • To better understand the gender issues in engineering and technology research • To propose effective measures and recommendations to empower women engineers’ careers in research • To promote a diverse and creative research sector key issue both in the European and in national research policies.

  3. PROMETEA OBJECTIVES • To explore the gender dynamics of male and female careers in different engineering organisations: • To compare different fields of engineering • To compare academic and industrial settings; private and public organisations • To compare innovative and traditional companies and organisations

  4. PROMETEA OBJECTIVES • To explore the effect of organisational cultures on male and female careers in different engineering organisations: • Differential effects of supportive cultures • Differential effects of negative cultures • Identification of different barriers to developing a successful career for men and women

  5. PROMETEA OBJECTIVES • To explore the assessment and measures of excellence in engineering and technology research and the impact on male and female careers: • To compare different arenas of recognizing excellence and actors who assess and evaluate excellence • To compare success rates in research funding and awards • To compare salaries, bonuses and research budgets

  6. PROMETEA OBJECTIVES • To identify and evaluate good practice in different organisations: • To explore the factors that influence and motivate engineering organisations, in order to design and implement measures of equality • To explore the factors likely to influence the sustainability of effective equality actions over time • To draw recommendations aimed at promoting gender equality, for male and female careers in national and European engineering organisations.

  13. AIMS & IMPACT The hypotheses: The dynamics of gender varies depending on: • Different fields of engineering, • Different settings (academic and industrial), • Private/public organisations, • Innovative/traditional organisations.

  14. AIMS & IMPACT Good practices - suggestions: • To identify and evaluate good practices and factors likely to influence and motivateengineering organisations for a change. • To design factors and measures for effective equality actions taking also into account sustainability criteria . • To better understand gendered organisational cultures of engineering research. • To highlight promoting and hindering factors for women engineers' research careers.
