  3. Almost dropped out of college • What’s the point?! • Not struggling academically • Not struggling financially • Don’t ask “Why do so many leave?” • Ask “Why do some stay?”

  4. What did it take for me? • Opportunities to learn about the world • Opportunities to learn about myself • Opportunities to get involved • Connecting all of these thingsto curriculum, pedagogy, and student life

  5. What’s in it for us? • Improved student outcomes • Fulfilled faculty and staff • Improved relationship with the community, better communities • Improved support from the community • Political support • Financial support • Return to original mission of education!

  6. What’s in it for students? • More successful in academic goals • More successful in professional goals • More successful in life ARE WE MAKING THAT CASE?

  8. From APATHY to EMPATHY • Greek “a” + “pathos” = lack of feeling, emotion, compassion • Not knowing – lack of Awareness (Head) • Not hoping – lack Capacity (Hands) • Not connected – lack Context (Heart) • Rx = STORY, DIALOGUE! • Vs. Debate / Deliberation

  9. Where does it live? • Classroom: Curriculum + Pedagogy • Service Learning? Yes, IF… / Yes, AND… • “Lecturing about Democracy” • Student Affairs • Skills, experiences, relationships • Story and EMPATHY! • Admin & Support Services • Cafeteria Lady vs. Honors College Dean
