  29. Bible ReadingJohn 2:13-25(p. 1065)

  30. John 2:13-25 • 13 When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover, Jesus went up to Jerusalem. • 14 In the temple courts he found men selling cattle, sheep and doves, and others sitting at tables exchanging money. • 15 So he made a whip out of cords, and drove all from the temple area, both sheep and cattle; he scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables.

  31. John 2:13-25 • 16 To those who sold doves he said, "Get these out of here! How dare you turn my Father's house into a market!" • 17 His disciples remembered that it is written: "Zeal for your house will consume me." • 18 Then the Jews demanded of him, "What miraculous sign can you show us to prove your authority to do all this?" • 19 Jesus answered them, "Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days."

  32. John 2:13-25 • 20 The Jews replied, "It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and you are going to raise it in three days?" • 21 But the temple he had spoken of was his body. • 22 After he was raised from the dead, his disciples recalled what he had said. Then they believed the Scripture and the words that Jesus had spoken.

  33. John 2:13-25 • 23 Now while he was in Jerusalem at the Passover Feast, many people saw the miraculous signs he was doing and believed in his name. • 24 But Jesus would not entrust himself to them, for he knew all men. • 25 He did not need man's testimony about man, for he knew what was in a man.

  37. PSALM 134 (a)* (3/4) 1 Praise the LORD, all you his servants, as you serve with one accord; Praise the LORD in your night watches in the temple of the LORD.

  38. PSALM 134 (a)* (4/4) 2 Raise your hands within his temple; to the LORD your God give praise. 3 He who made the earth and heavens bless you from his holy place!

  39. Sermon John 2:13-25SHARING JESUS’ ZEAL

  40. 1 – Jesus’ Zeal for True Worship (13-17) • Zeal = a boiling pot. Why was Jesus so angry? • Peter Maiden: “Don’t give up on the church. It’s one of God’s most brilliant ideas.” • ACCESS to God for Sinners was being denied. Profit came first.

  41. Luther said: • “Zeal is love made angry.”

  42. 2 – Jesus’ Zeal for His Own Mission (17) • It takes a change to the FUTURE tense to understand Jesus’ mission from Psalm 69:9 • "Zeal for your house will consume me." • First suffering, then death, and then… what? What is the mission?

  43. 2 – Jesus’ Zeal for His Own Mission (17) • Note well: Jesus’ CORE MISSION (the cross) was opposed… • By the religious, and by the when-the-going-is-easy followers… • Christ’s mission is STILL opposed today, and in much the same ways.

  44. 3 – Jesus’ Zeal for the True Temple (18-22) • Why did Jesus ignore a 46 year old gleaming-white temple? (Started in 20 BC, it took thousands of masons until 64 AD to complete the building project). • What has the last line in Zechariah’s prophecy to teach us?

  45. Zechariah 14:21 • No Canaanites in the temple please! • That’s the NIV and AV, but in the ESV:“And there shall no longer be a trader in the house of the LORD of hosts on that day.” • Do we accept Jesus as our true temple? Is he our one and only way to know and serve God?

  46. EVERYONE IS ZEALOUS! • Does Jesus offend your zeal, or inspire your zeal? • Alexander Shields:“…a pint of hope, three pints of faith, and nine pints of hot, hot, hot burning zeal.”

  47. OUR RESPONSE TO GOD’S WORD (1 Thessalonians 5:23-24) • Minister: May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. • People: The one who calls you is faithful and he will do it.

  48. OUR RESPONSE TO GOD’S WORD (1 Thessalonians 5:23-24) • Minister: May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. • People: The one who calls you is faithful and he will do it.

  49. Psalm 72:17-19 (p. 314) 17 His name for ever shall endure; last like the sun it shall: Men shall be blessed in him, and blessed all nations shall him call.

  50. Psalm 72:17-19 (2/3) 18 Now blessèd be the LORD our God, the God of Israel, For he alone doth wondrous works, in glory that excel.
