  1. NO EXCUSES What you can do to reduce the risk of cancer

  2. NO EXCUSES: What you can do to reduce the risk of cancer • Many of the things we do to stay healthy can also decrease our risk for getting cancer • Eating healthy • Exercise • Not smoking • Annual check-ups at the doctor and dentist • Wearing sunscreen • Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States

  3. Things done specifically to reduce the risk of cancer • Women • Breast Self Exam (BSE) • Men • Testicular Self Exam (TSE)

  4. Why can’t I listen to only half of this presentation? • Men • You are also at risk for breast cancer and should perform a BSE on yourself • You can help your significant other perform a BSE • You can tell others about the ease and benefits of BSE • Women • Although you are not at risk for TSE, you can help your significant other perform a TSE • You can tell others about the ease and benefits of TSE

  5. The power of statistics • Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States • Responsible for 23% of deaths • Third cause accountable for less than 7% of all deaths • Fourth cause accountable for less than 2% • Breast is the most common cancer in women • Responsible for 32% of cancer • Second is Lung Cancer responsible for 12% of all cases • 1 in 7 women will develop breast cancer

  6. The power of statistics • Testicular cancer rates are on the rise and are up nearly 60% • Men age 18-24 are at the highest risk for getting testicular cancer

  7. Importance of early detection • When breast cancer is detected early the survival rate jumps from 88% to 97% • This might not seem like a big jump but out of 1000 women 117 more women will survive than would have because of early detection • The survival rate for testicular cancer is 99% when detected early

  8. The most effective program for early detection of breast cancer includes three steps • A breast exam by a health care professional starting at age 18 • at least every 3 years starting at age 20 • every year after age 40 • A monthly BSE starting at age 20 • A mammogram, or breast x-ray, every year starting at age 40 • If under 40 and have a history of breast cancer or other concerns about personal risk, talk to your doctor about when to start mammograms and how often to get them

  9. Why there are NO EXCUSES to not performing the 3 steps in the early detection of breast cancer • Girls, you should visit a gynecologist annually once you turn 18, whether sexually active or not, and they can perform a breast exam on you • Can’t say “I didn’t want to make a separate appointment” • If your family has a history of breast cancer, talk to your doctor at a regularly scheduled appointment and add if necessary add a mammogram to your doctor routine • A monthly BSE should be performed after your period ends and takes only a few minutes and could be the best time investment of your lifetime • Make a point to routinely do this the day after your period ends so you can’t say, “I forgot” • Takes only a few minutes so you can’t say “I didn’t have time” • Doesn’t cost anything so you can’t say “I didn’t have the money” • It’s easy so you can’t say “I didn’t know how”

  10. The most effective program for early detection of testicular cancer includes 2 steps • A testicular exam by a health care professional starting at age 15 • Monthly TSE starting at age 15

  11. Why there are NO EXCUSES to not performing the 3 steps in early detection of testicular cancer • Guys, you should visit a doctor annually for your general check-up and they can perform a testicular exam on you • Can’t say “I didn’t want to make a separate appointment” • A monthly TSE can be performed at any time during the month and takes only a few minutes and could be the best time investment of your lifetime • Mark your calendar to do this the same day every month so you can’t say “I forgot” • Takes only a few minutes so you can’t say “I didn’t have time” • Doesn’t cost anything so you can’t say “I didn’t have the money” • It’s even easier than a BSE so you can’t say “I don’t know how”

  12. Steps to performing a BSE • Looking • Use a mirror large enough to see your whole chest. Check the shape and size of your breasts, and the color and texture of your skin in three positions • Arms down at sides • Arms in the air • Hands squeezing hips to tighten your chest muscles • Bending forward at the waste with hands on your hips

  13. Steps to performing a BSE cont. • Feeling • Most effective while performed lying down • Spread the breast tissue more evenly • Check the whole breast from the armpit to the breastbone, and from the collarbone to the braline • Cover the entire area by going up and down in strips about as wide as three fingers • Using three fingers, make three-dime sized circles and repeat this motion over the whole breast • One just lightly • One deeper • One deeper • Don’t lift fingers away from the skin • Lower your arm and examine the armpit • Do the same with the other arm • Variations • If you have larger breasts or breast implants go to www.komen.org for further instructions

  14. Steps to performing a TSE • Hold the penis out of the way and examine each testicle separately • Hold one testicle between the thumbs and fingers with both hands and roll it gently between the fingers • Look and feel for any hard lumps smooth rounded masses or any changes in size, shape, or consistency of the testes

  15. THERE ARE NO EXCUSES! • Quick and easy • Can be fun • Life saving!
