Rule of France • Through plebiscite Napoleon gains power • Formed Banking system • Lycee- public school • Concordat- allow church to exist but no official religion • Napoleonic Code- strict written code of law (including equality before the law, ability to choose profession and religious toleration) • Merit based government system • Women’s rights diminish including harder to divorce, and women could not inherit land and were treated as minors in lawsuits • 1804 Crowned as Emperor

  6. Empire • Loss of Santo Domigue led by Toussant L’Overture • Cut loss in Americas sells Louisiana Territories ($ and strength to English Enemy) • Expands in Europe instead

  7. New World Order • Grand Empires 3 parts (The French Empire, Dependant States, Allied States) • Dependant States= Family members (Spain, Holland Italy, and Grand Duchy of Warsaw) • Allied States Enemy states brought into a fight against Great Britain (Prussia, Russia, Sweden, Austria)

  8. Napoleon Dominated Europe for 5 years • Lose at Trafalgar (1805) where Horatio Nelson defeats Napoleons Navy. Ends hope of direct invasion of England
