Purpose & Description • Purpose: • Use fMRI • Find area(s) responsible for articulation • Expansion of Penfield (1930s, 1940s) • Subjects: • 8 male, 8 female • Ages 21-49 • ESL • Procedure: • 16 sec task, 16 sec rest • 4 tasks of interest: • 1. Phonation of schwa • 2. Glottal stops • 3. Lip protrusion • 4. Vertical tongue movement

Conclusions • Valid study? • Low number of participants • Very diverse • Clinical implications: • Can assign etiological cause to some motor speech disorders • Provides insight to current communication disorders • Future practice: • fMRI for all clients • Norm-referenced brain mapping of speech and language areas • Advantages and limitations • Goal writing
