Accelerating Operational Use of Research Data

This initiative aims to invest in basic and applied weather research and development, focusing on the impact of NASA observations on weather forecasts. It involves collaboration with NOAA colleagues and the transition of research results to operational centers. The project also includes the development of algorithms for satellite data assimilation and retrieval for short and medium-range weather forecasting.

  1. Bill Lapenta/Tsengdar Lee NASA Science Mission Directorate June 13, 2007 SPoRT - ROSES Solicitation

  2. NASA’s Weather Research Activities • Under Earth Science Research Division/Research and Analysis Program and Applied Science Program • Invest in basic and applied weather research and development • Collaborate closely with NOAA colleagues • Developed algorithms in satellite data assimilation and retrieval • Applied directly to short and medium range weather forecast • JCSDA and SPoRT are two of the major investments

  3. NASA Weather Program Activities • Focuses on the impact of NASA observations on weather forecasts both in medium range and in short range • Participates in NASA/NOAA Research and Operation (R&O) transition • Fully committed to facilitate transition between weather research and operation • Operational needs (requirement) flow to the researchers • Research results flow to operation • Operation feedbacks to the research • Scope is not limited in R&O transition • Supported NASA SPoRT/NOAA NWS SRH workshop to discuss research and operation transition framework • Initiated additional discussions with NWS HQ

  4. Roles in the R&O Process Effort NOAA Research NASA Research NWS Observation System

  5. ROSES NRA ROSES NRA (Research Opportunities in Space and Earth Sciences NASA Research Announcement) • Element Title: “Accelerating Operational use of Research Data” • NOI Due: 7/6/2007 Proposal Due: 9/18/2007 • Areas of interest: Weather, Climate, and Ecological Forecasting • Focus on transition • Duration of award: 2 years • Qualification: (1) must have prior research results showing positive impact, (2) must transition to operational centers, (3) must establish a transition schedule, and (4) operational centers will participate in peer review in an ex officio capacity. • NCEP, NWS HQ (AWIPS), SPoRT and JCSDA are identified as conduits

  6. AWIPS II Project • Tsengdar Lee, Steve Ambrose and Steve Goodman (via telecon) visited Jason Tuell at NWS HQ. • NASA Goddard working with NWS on sharing satellite mission geosphysical parameters. NWS and NESDIS is interested in NASA’s suite of satellites, particularly Glory, Cloudsat and Calipso. • Working to facilitate access to data in near real time mode when possible. • Upon sharing of data, some hybrid products using NASA satellite data may be developed with NESDIS. NPP is a focus area. Workshop possible and being discussed. • NASA’s DEVELOP summer students will be working to create JAVA plug-ins for AWIPS-II to test the beta version. The students will visit Silver Spring to see the AWIPS-II software installation. • Since resources are being utilized at both agencies, MOU discussions are underway but we want to take this slow and continue to work informally in developing this partnership.
