  3. Lack of Warm-water Port • Russia Lacked a warm-water port, so Peter the Great waged a war with the Ottoman Empire for access to the Black Sea.

  4. War With Sweden • Peter the Great wanted to expand his empire so he invaded the Swedish Empire.

  5. What did all the monarchs have in common? • Peter the Great, along with all the other monarchs wanted to expand royal power. They all believed the should be absolute rulers.

  6. What did Peter have in common with Louis XIV? • Louis XIV • Love of Luxury- Peter built the lavish city of St. Petersburg, Louis built the luxurious Versailles as a show of power Peter’s St.Petersburg Louis’ Versailles

  7. What did Peter have in common with Catherine the Great? • They both shared an interest in adding a warm-water port for Russia

  8. Who would Peter get along with? • Peter the Great would get along with Frederick II of Prussia because they both sought to modernize their country.

  9. Who would Peter not get along with? • Peter the Great would most likely not get along with Philip II of Spain because Philip was ultra-religious. Peter wanted to modernize his country and religion was not a priority for him.

  10. Then Now Peter the Great’s expansion left a lasting impact on Russia. Much of the lands he won from Sweden remain a part of Russia. For example, St. Petersburg is still a part of Russia

Peter the Great was an absolute monarch, he had control of everything. • Currently, there are separate branches of government: there is the president, the judiciary branch, and a cabinet. • Russia had a policy of many foreign wars to expand its empire • Excluding some unrest, Russia has been fairly peaceful for the past few decades.

  12. Which monarch would you like to live under • Peter the Great • Seems like there wasn’t too much religious persecution in his empire. • Wanted to modernize Russia, implemented many reforms.

  13. Which country would we choose to live under • Austria • Temperate climate • Well-developed economy • Low Unemployment rate (4.9%) • High GDP Per Capita (35,500)
