  3. Ghazi • The idea of spreading Islam by fighting infidels or heretics • Created successful leaders through military conquest

  4. Women’s Roles • Islam universally forbade women from serving in any type of political venue. • As in all instances, there are some exceptions to the rule, but they are just that, exceptions.

  5. Economic Traditions • Surplus was used to finance government and bureaucracies • Staples: Wheat and Rice • Colombian Exchange offered some supplement • i.e. tobacco and coffee • Coffee house and Huka became mainstays of Islamic culture • Population Increase • Central location makes trade ideal

Religions (other than Islam) • Ottomans • Large numbers of Jews and Christians • Safavids • Zoroastrians, Jews, and Christians • Mughal • Hindus, Jains, Zoroastrians, Christians, and Sikhs • Religious Minorities • No forced conversions, but paid taxes • Mughals went one step further and practiced complete tolerance.

  7. Creation of Islamic “Culture” • Rulers competed to get services of scholars, poets, artists, and architects • Built lavish mosques, palaces, government buildings, bridges, fountains, schools, hospitals, etc.
