5. The delta and the valley delta The delta and the valley are the two main parts of the Nile river. valley (green) The valley is 4200 miles long. and from 0.5 to 13 miles wide. The Nile floods once a year over the valley.

6. Agriculture • The Nile river floods for about 10 weeks. • When the flood water recedes, it leaves behind a layer of fine black silt, which was the fertile soil that Egyptian farmers used. • The Egyptians saw the new silt as a gift from the Nile.

8. Transportation • The Nile river was a busy highway with riverboats carrying people, animals and goods from place to place. • The simple boats were made from papyrus held together with rope.
