BGÉ Alternative Energy Research Fund • Support research into emerging energy-related technologies • To support an increase in the quantity and quality of research in alternative energies in Ireland’s colleges to bring technologies to market. • The focus of the fund is on 5 main areas: • Energy Production • Wind, Solar, Anaerobic Digestion, Pyrolysis, Gasification, Ocean, Tidal, Geothermal, District Heating • Distributed Generation • Micro CHP, Micro Wind, • Transport • Natural Gas/ Biogas vehicles and infrastructure, Electric vehicles and infrastructure • Operations Innovation • Power recovery, Energy Storage, • Energy Services • Assessment of products for residential or IC offering to complement our existing energy business

National Renewable Targets National Targets • RES-E: 40% electricity from renewable sources by 2020. • RES-H: 12% heating from renewable sources by 2020: • 2009: TFC for thermal energy was 5,813 mscm of natural gas equivalent (5,499 ktoe) • 12% of 5,813 is 697 mscm • Renewable energy accounted for 3.6% of thermal energy in 2008 • RES-T: 10% renewable fuels for transport by 2020: • 2009: TFC for transport energy was 5,935 mscm of natural gas equivalent (5,612 ktoe) • 10% of 5,935 is 594 mscm • Renewable energy accounted for 1.2% of transport energy in 2008 • Source: SEI EPSSU Energy in Ireland Key Statistics 2009.

Current Status of Marine Energy • Irish Targets of 75MW by 2012 and 500MW by 2020; • Accessible resources: • 11.7 TWh of wave resource (40% of Irish demand); • 2.6 TWh of tidal resources. • ReFIT established at €220/MWh (€70/MWh for onshore wind); • Up to €26m pledged by Government to support sector; • MERC and Centralised Energy Research are a priority; • Marine Energy could be a €1b per annum industry within Ireland in the next decade

Renewable Gas in Ireland • Completed a report with E&Y/UCC on Renewable Gas • Main Recommendations: • Set National Target for Proportion of Biomethane in gas demand; • Introduce new RGFIT akin to REFIT; • Set Regulatory standards for renewable gas acceptance into grid; • Implement new support structures for agriculture; • Align renewable energy with waste management to deliver certainty of feedstock supply; • Increase research funding into sector;

  12. Renewable Gas Potential • Technical potential of c.0.4 BCM (7.5% of ROI gas demand) • Significant contribution to RES H • Benefits include carbon abatement, waste management, security of supply, economic development and innovation

Energy Research Centres • Multitude of individual research institutions carrying out R&D within the energy and environmental sectors in Cork (UCC/CIT); • 6 of the 20 significant green research centres on the island of Ireland either located in the Cork region or associated with a Higher Education Institute (HEI) in region; • Marine & Energy Research Cluster Ireland (MERC) established to promote Ireland as a world class maritime & energy research and development location - brings together expertise from UCC and the National Maritime College of Ireland (NMCI), working with CIT, utilities, developers and the Irish Naval Service and Port of Cork; • €35 million investment in Tyndall National Institute for new International Energy Research Centre (IERC) supported by the major American multi-national, United Technologies Corporation (UTC.)
