  1. Warm Up: Write down the participial phrase, and underline the participle. What is the phrase modifying? • Working in the lab, the scientist created a robot. • Early films were still pictures projected on a wall. • Moving pictures came later. • Food sealed in cans was given to the campers. • Quickly frozen food is necessary to preserve the freshness.

  2. Verbal of the Day: Gerunds Add these notes to your verbal and participle notes from yesterday.

  3. What does it look like? • Gerunds look like verbs, and end in –ing. • Examples: running, jumping, swimming, hiking

  4. How do they behave? • Gerunds are nouns. They may not look like it, but they are things. • Examples: Yelling and screaming can be things.

  5. Gerunds can be… • Subjects of sentences. • Objects of sentences (direct, indirect, prepositional).

  6. Examples • Biking is a good cardiovascular activity. (Biking is used as the subject of the sentence.) • I hate whining. (Whining is used as a direct object in this sentence.)

  7. Practice: In each of the following sentences, determine what each gerund is, and what part of a sentence it is. • The grumbling is causing everyone to get upset. • My sister loves sleeping past noon.

  8. Gerunds and Participles: Identify the verbals and decide whether they are a gerund or participle. • The heartbreaking loss ended our season. • Skiing is one of the best ways to enjoy a snowy day. • The injured player was carted off the field. • I enjoy traveling, and do it whenever I can. • The flying squirrel enjoys gliding to other trees.
