  9. Unfairness 'increases heart risk' People who feel they are treated unfairly, including in the home and community, may have a higher risk of developing heart disease, a study says. University College London researchers studied 8,000 people, says the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health. They found those with a profound sense of injustice had a 55% higher chance of suffering serious heart disease. Experts believe a sense of unfairness engenders negative emotions which may prompt biochemical changes in the body...

  11. Downsizing harms employees' mental health Thu Jan 18, 2007 4:03am EST LONDON (Reuters) - Workers who survive downsizing measures and hold on to their jobs may consider themselves lucky but they have a higher risk of suffering from mental health problems, Finnish scientists said on Thursday. After studying the impact of downsizing on municipal employees they found men who kept their jobs were 50 percent more likely to be given a prescription for an antidepressant or sleeping pill than people where there had been no enforced layoffs. "This quasi-experimental outcome study of 26,653 city employees suggests that downsizing is a mental health risk, not only for employees who lose their jobs, but also for those who remain in employment," said Professor Mika Kivimaki, of University College London....

  13. Organisational downsizing and increased use of psychotropic drugs among employees who remain in employment.Kivimäki M, Honkonen T, …, Virtanen M, Vahtera JJ Epidemiol Community Health 2007 Feb 61(2):154-8 "This Finnish study found that working in organizations that had undergone downsizing increased the risk of psychotropic drug use (antidepressants, anxiolytics and hypnotics), even among those employees who were so lucky not to lose their jobs.Research on the effects of the psychosocial work environment on mental health are difficult to conduct, because usually both exposures (adverse psychosocial working conditions) and endpoints (mental health disorders) are measured by self-report, making studies susceptible to common method bias. This study found an elegant way to address this problem. Both the exposure (experiencing of downsizing assessed from employers' records) and the endpoint (psychotropic drug use extracted from registries) were measured with administrative data. This paper is an important contribution to the literature both with regard to psychiatric epidemiology and to psychosocial occupational health research. A limitation of the paper, which is acknowledged by the authors, is that information on psychotropic drug use prior to the downsizing period was not available."
