  3. ALL ABOUT MRS.Paonessa Teacher for 30 yrs. in Newington-27 yrs. at John Wallace two years at Paterson, and 1 at Kellogg. Taught grades 5-8 over the years-Regular Ed. And Special Ed.-have a passion for both! 20 years as Grade 5 teacher (My favorite grade!) Have a husband, Frank and two children-Kristen and Mike-both have graduated college-woo hoo!)and are in the work force making their way. Hobbies include reading , traveling, and hanging out with family and friends.

Grading/Homework Policy: Language Arts & Social Studies • Grading policy: Language Arts and Social Studies Grades in LA and Social Studies will be based on a variety of work including classwork, homework, quizzes, tests, and performance tasks. • Grades in Language Arts and Social Studies will be weighted as follows: Assessments will count for 35% of your grade. ‘Performance Tasks’ will count for 35% of grade Homework will count for 15% of your grade. Classwork will count for 15% of your grade.

  10. Grading/Homework Policy: Language Arts & Social Studies If you should forget your homework, you may use your “quarterly” homework pass and turn in your homework the next day without penalty. If the assignment is not handed in the next day, you will need to fill out a homework excuse note as explained below. • You are expected to complete your homework every night. It is your responsibility as a student. • If you have already used your quarterly passes, you must fill out a homework excuse note and have it signed by parent. You must complete the missing assignment(s) that night and hand in the late work the next day. • You must write your homework assignments in your planner each day. • Emails/phone calls home will be made if homework is not being completed regularly.

  11. Language Arts • This is a transition year for Language Arts as the curriculum is being revised to match the new common core standards that have been established. The common core standards in Language Arts will help students develop the skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Both fiction and non-fiction texts are used in the curriculum. Students may also be involved in whole class study of novels and small literature discussion groups. There will be 5 units that students will explore this year in 5th grade. • Unit 1 – Launching the Year and Fitting In • Unit 2 – People Who Make a Difference (Biographies} • Unit 3 – Exploring Your World (Non-Fiction Emphasis) • Unit 4 – Human Interaction with the Planet (Research) • Unit 5 – Poetry and Plays

More About Language Arts: The writing component will incorporate the following: • Explicit modeling and practice in the conventions of written English; grammar, usage, mechanics. • Instruction in varied genres; narrative, description, expository, persuasive, poetry. • Writer’s Craft Skills: developing a clear focus, organization of ideas, effective word choice and sentence structures, expression of one’s own view point • Process Writing; prewriting, drafting, revising, proofreading; use of models, practice, graphic organizers and checklists. • Use of 6 Traits of Writing- Ideas, Sentence Fluency, Organization, Word Choice, Voice, Conventions. Students will be learning a variety of specific targeted skills in writing, grammar, and spelling. Students will also develop skills in researching, note taking, outlining, and report writing. Creative writing and journal writing are also part of grade 5. Students will be maintaining a writer's notebook, which will be a tool for fostering ideas for creative writing in various genres.

  13. More about Language Arts… • Monthly Reading Calendar: (Independent Reading Responsibility) • This year students will be responsible for reading at least 20 minutes a day for 25 dayseach month. It is up to each student to decide what days they plan to read. There could be certain days when a student may not read, and that’s ok! Just remember, at the end of the month, students should have read at least 25 days. Students are responsible for having an adult sign each day that they read and recording the pages read and the title of the book. At the end of each month, this calendar will be collected and counted as a homework grade that is worth 25 points.

Social Studies: Map Skills / Geography & Africa/Kenya • In the first unit of study, students will learn about types of maps, geographical features, latitude and longitude, and continents as well as other main features of the world. Students will apply learning to the study of Africa’s physical features. In addition, students will be introduced to the term “culture” and have the opportunity to learn about Kenya and some aspects of Africa’s geography and people. Japan • Japan will be a featured country of study along with map skills related to Asia. Students will learn about the culture of Japan as well as geographical features. Topics include Japanese schools, sports, art forms (haiku, origami, mon kiri, etc.) tourist attractions, performing arts and Japanese cuisine. This unit is a favorite, featuring many interesting and creative hands on projects.

  15. Step Up Program Students will participate in the Step-Up program in January. This year the program will be held during social studies once a week for the month of January. It is run by the Newington Police Department. It includes 4 focus Lessons: • Week 1: Respect/Responsibility/Accountability/Intro to Tobacco Facts • Week 2: Tobacco Facts/Health Effects • Week 3: Internet Safety (Predators & Trolls, Chat rooms and Online Game Safety) • Week 4: Internet Safety (Cyber Bullying, Social Network Sites, Facebook and MySpace)
